The St Louis Cardinals have traded SP Ray Washburn to the Cincinnati Reds in exchange for SP George Culver. The 31 year old Washburn was 8-6 with a 3.08 ERA in 29 games including 18 starts last year for the Cardinals. Washburn was a member of he 1967 Cardinals that went on to win the World Series. In 1968 Washburn "NO HIT" the Giants, the first by a Cardinal since 1941. The 26 year old Culver was 7-6 with 1 save, a 3.61 ERA in 38 games including 14 starts for the Reds. Like Washburn, Culver had a NO HITTER in 1968 dispatching the Phillies 6-1.

The Philadelphia Phillies have traded RF Johnny Callison and a player to be named later to the Chicago Cubs for RF Oscar Gamble and SP Dick Selma. The 30 year old Callison hit .234 with 17 HRs and 65 RBIs in 142 games for the Phillies. Callison was a fan favorite of the Phillies as he played there from 1960-69.Callison is a 3-time All Star. The 19 year old Gamble hit .290 with 0 HRs and 10 RBIs in 73 games for the Cubs. The Cubs may regret losing Gamble so early on in his career, the Negro League find will play many seasons in the MLB. The 26 year old Selma was 10-11 with a 2.84 ERA in 34 games with the Padres (4) and Cubs (30) including 29 starts. Selma made his MLB debut in September 1965 with the Mets. He was traded for the 2nd time this season.

The St Louis Cardinals have traded RF Vada Pinson to the Cleveland Indians for CF Jose Cardenal. The 31 year old hit 287 with 10 HRs and 62 RBIs in 145 games for the Cardinals. Pinson hit a Grand Slam in his 4th career MLB game in 1958 at the tender age of 19. The 26 year old Cardenal hit .297 with 12 HRs and 53 RBIs in 149 games for the Indians. The Cuban born Cardenal made his MLB debut with the Giants in 1963.

The Houston Astros have purchased the contract of RP Mike Marshall from the Seattle Pilots. The 26 year old was 3-10 with 1 save, a 5.29 ERA in 35 games including 14 starts. Marshall relies on his screw-ball, as he became and advocate to help limit pitching arm injuries, including suggesting the surgery for Tommy John, which eventually became know as "Tommy John Surgery".

The California Angels have traded SP Jim McGlothlin, RP Pedro Borbon and RP Vern Geishert to the Cincinnati Reds for LF Alex Johnson and 1B Chico Ruiz. The 26 year old McGlothlin was 15-13 with a 3.01 ERA in 35 starts for the Angels. McGlothlin made his MLB debut on September 20th, 1965 for the California Angels. He made the 1967 AL All Star team with his 12-8 record that year. The 22 year old Borbon was 0-1 with a 4.50 ERA in 2 games (4 IPs) for the Angels. Borbon is the MLB's #74 prospect and will become a big part of the Reds bullpen. The 23 year old Geishert was 0-3 with a 6.35 ERA in 4 games including 3 starts for the Angels. The 26 year old Johnson hit .362 with 13 HRs and 88 RBIs in 149 games for the Reds, his .362 batting average led the NL. Named the 1968 NL Comeback Player of the Year, Johnson was part of a 1966 OF the boasted CF Curt Flood and RF Lou Brock. Brock was originally in LF but Johnson displaced him to RF. It is rumored that the Reds were looking for pitching and with Bernie Carbo on the horizon, it made Johnson expendable. The 30 year old Ruiz hit .232 with 1 HR and 14 RBIs in 83 games for the Reds. Ruiz was mostly a bench player for the Reds but was forced into full time action when Leo Cardenas got injured in 1967. After playing real well at short, but everyday Ruiz joking told the Reds manager at the time, Dave Bristol that he should "Bench me or trade me".
