This Weeks Major Transactions

The St Louis Cardinals have traded C Tim McCarver, RF Byron Browne, CF Curt Flood and CL Joe Hoerner to the Philadelphia Phillies for 1B Dick Allen, SP Jerry Johnson and 2B Cookie Rojas. The 27 year old McCarver hit .311 with 9 HRs and 62 RBIs in 144 games for the Cardinals. The 2-time World Series winner debuted in the MLB in September 1959 as a 17 year old. The 26 year old Browne hit .266 with 5 HRs and 14 RBIs in 74 games for the Cardinals. The 31 year old Flood hit .295 with 6 HRs and 68 RBIs in 157 games for the Cardinals. It is rumoured that Flood is not happy with the trade. Flood's anger may be as a result of his unhappiness with Cardinals owners Anheuser-Busch when he felt he was slighted on a pay raise at the end of the 1968 season and Busch's comments he felt were directed a him during the 1969 spring training boycott. The 32 year old Hoerner was 10-11 with 13 saves, a 2.63 ERA in a NL leading 68 appearances for the Cardinals. The 27 year old Dick Allen hit .263 with 28 HRs and 75 RBIs in 155 games for the Phillies. The 1964 NL Rookie of the Year's career did not get off to a great start when he faced racial harassment while in the minors in Little Rock. Residents staged protest parades against Allen, the teams first black player. The 25 year old Johnson was 4-14 with a 4.14 ERA in 31 games including 23 starts for the Phillies. The 30 year old Rojas hit .241 with 4 HRs and 17 RBIs in 108 games for the Phillies. Rojas selected baseball over his fathers choice as a doctor. The Phillies used him in all 9 positions in 1964 including pitcher and catcher. In summary, with Curt Floods later legal battle over this trade, the trade itself may have led to what in baseball is now known as "Free Agency".
