The Sacramento Solons are in town to play a 4 game series through the weekend. They just won a pair of games in Hollywood and have won 5 of their last 6. We were 8-6 against them last year and 9-5 in 2001. They are currently tied for 7th in the PCL in scoring with 4.38 runs per game (Portland is 3rd with 5.52). The Solons are 7th in fewest runs allowed with 3.90 per game (Portland is still #1 with 2.95). Their run differential is +10 and ours is +54, the best in Baseball!

Sacramento Solons (13-8 .619 1 GB tied for 2nd place in the PCL West) at
Portland Beavers (14-7 .667 in 1st place in the PCL West)

SAC: Ellis Collier (29-R 0-0 0.00) vs. POR: Steve Muir (28-R 3-1 3.08) Gold Glove(01)

This will be the 2nd start of the season for Collier. In his 1st, he faced 4 batters and got them all out with 2 strikeouts, but had to leave with an injury. He has not pitched in over 3 weeks. Last year, Collier was 2-0 against us, but we scored 4 runs in each game.

Muir won his last start, but only went 5.1 innings, though he only allowed 1 run. He has only struck out 4 batters in 26.1 IP. Last year, he struck out 5.0 per 9 IP.

Game Start: 7:05 PM
Ballpark: Metropolitan Stadium
Weather: 59 F, Partly Cloudy, with a 9 MPH wind blowing in from right

Top of the First:
Harvey Turner tries to bunt his way on, but 1B Glenn Snowden makes the play, 3-4! Bob Swanson swings at the first pitch and pops out to left. Dennis Rayner grounds out to 2nd! 1-2-3!

Bottom of the First:
Jerry Suazo strikes out... Brian Mitchell swings at the first pitch and loops a hit to right center. Fernando Mexicano pops out to short. Mitchell steals his 10th base of the season. Glenn Snowden hits one high and deep down the left field line and OVER the fence!! 2 to 0, Beavers! Carlos Lopez grounds out to short.

Bottom of the Fifth:
Jerry Suazo leads off with a walk and then Brian Mitchell triples to the corner in right! 3 to 0, Beavers! Fernando Mexicano hits a home run to right!! 5 to 0, Beavers! P Ellis Collier goes to take a shower. New Pitcher: Brian Beeman (30-L), a waiver claim from Miami in January. He has a 1.29 ERA in 14 IP with 2 BB and 17 SO. He gets Snowden and Lopez out.

Bottom of the Eighth:

On the Hill: Ken Moller (26-L), after a perfect 7th. Glenn Snowden leads off with a home run to left! His second tater of the day!

Won - 6 to 0

Our 3rd complete game in the last 5 games!

We had 7 hits and made no errors
Sacramento had 6 hits and made 1 error

Steve Muir (W 4-1) went 9 shutout innings (CG), allowed 6 hits, 1 walk and struck out 3 (a season high). I do not know why his strikeouts have dropped so much, but it seems to be working for him. But I don't think we'll be too keen on re-signing a pitcher to a $1 million+ deal who strikes out 2 batters a game, though....

Ellis Collier (L 0-1) went 4.1 innings, gave us 5 runs, 5 hits, 2 home runs, 3 walks and struck out 3.

CF Brian Mitchell had 2 hits with a triple, stole his 10th base of the season, scored 2 runs and had an RBI. 3B Fernando Mexicano hit his 6th home run of the season, drew a walk and had 2 RBI. 1B Glenn Snowden had 3 hits with 2 home runs (5 for the year) and had 3 RBI.
