The story here isn't that a professional athlete can't afford to a place to stay in the Bay Area. The story is that a single man making $80,000 a year is poor enough to qualify for government assistance.
While 80k a year wouldn't even afford living in a car in SF, it would pay for a decent house in Antioch if he wanted to commute.
