In order to get the a facegen (or real) pic to fit I set the width in the xml to the width of the player pic area in the image file so there is no empty space along the sides and then the height is set to maintain the 2:3 ratio (so there is no stretching or smushing). Unfortunately this usually results in the height being larger than what is visible in the player pic area and facegen or real pics the are zoomed in or close-ups get part of the faces cut off.

That card has the facegen_zoom set to normal instead of in or random because of the cutting off. You can try and edit the size in the xml but that may result in empty space along the sides of the players picture or smushing the player pic if you only change the height. It's probably easier to find a different image for the player, make the card with it, then switch back to your original image.
