Tuesday, May 15, Year I

The Angels won yesterday while we were idle and they pulled themselves even with us in the standings.

Ah! Smell the grass! This will be our first game on a natural surface after 29 in a row on plastic.

We are in the City by the Bay to play the Seals a 3 game series. This will be our first meeting with them. They swept Oakland in 3 games over the weekend. They are currently 5th in the PCL in scoring with 4.3 runs per game (Portland is 9th with 3.6). They are 3rd in HR (36) and last in SB (22). Portland is tied for 10th in HR (21) and tied for 4th in SB (38). The Seals are 6th in runs allowed with 4.0 per game (Portland is still #1, but falling at 3.3). They have the worst BABIP in the PCL at .303 (Portland is 3rd at .267).

Portland Beavers (20-16 .556 tied for 1st place in the PCL West) at
San Francisco Seals (19-17 .528 1 GB in 3rd place in the PCL West)

POR: Terry Melton (26-R 6-2 2.00 ERA) vs. SF: Brad Simpson (34-R 3-2 3.23 ERA)

Simpson has not been tough to hit so far this season, but he does not walk many and he keeps the ball in the park. He has only allowed 1 HR this year in 53 IP.

Melton goes after his normal 4 days of rest while Ron Wolf (27-R) will take an extra two days off to maybe make him stronger and to set our rotation with the best pitching pitcher at the head of it.

Bottom of the Fourth:
Terry Melton is on cruise control. Lead off hitter Chris Greenwald grounds out to 1st, unassisted and Melton calls the trainer out.... He has hurt his back.... Our Bullpen is still worn out even after the day off yesterday. So we send Ron Wolf in. He retires the next two to end the inning.

Call to the Bullpen: Lou Hertzberg (29-L) and his magic screwball. The infield is in....why is the infield in? The run on 3rd does not matter so much...
