The Houston Astros are in town to play a 3 game series. They won 2 of 3 at Seattle over the weekend. We beat them in 2 games in Houston two weeks ago, but after we left town they won 8 games in a row until losing yesterday by 1 run in the bottom of the 9th. They are currently 8th in the PCL in scoring with 3.6 runs per game (Portland is up to #6 at 3.7). Each of our teams have only hit 16 home runs on the season, tied for last in the League. However, their hitters have an excuse in the Astrodome. They have only hit 2 of their 16 home runs at home. Ours have been doing better of late, though. They are 3rd in fewest runs allowed with 3.3 per game (Portland is #1 at 3.1).

Top of the First:
Don Mosley leads off with a double to right. Bob Webster lines a hit to left and Mosley scores. 1 to 0, Astros. Bob Trigg flies out to center, Perry Templet making a nice catch. Bill Henning grounds out to short and Webster moves up to 2nd. Ed Sacco, the hottest hitter on their team, strikes out!

Bottom of the First:
Perry Templet grounds out to 2nd. Jeff Schottler pops out to short. Jeff Austin lines a hit to center and steals 2nd. Dale Ainsworth strikes out.

Through 5 innings, Horn has done a decent job, holding them to the 1 run, but we have not had a hit since we got one in the first inning.

Bottom of the Sixth:
With 1 out, P Tom Horn reaches on an error by 3B Ed Sacco. Perry Templet and Jeff Schottler then draw back-to-back walks to load the bases up with 1 out. An excellent scoring opportunity with our #3 and #4 hitters up, you think? Jeff Austin, formerly our awesome cleanup hitter and now our awesome #3 hitter strikes out. Dale Ainsworth grounds out to the pitcher....

We load the bases up again in the Eighth inning, but still get no runs. Our awesome #3 hitter, Jeff Austin, fouled out to 1st with 2 runners on base.

Bottom of the Ninth:
On the Hill: Phil DeNeui (26-R), their closer, beginning his second inning of work. He already has 10 Saves this season, but has not been mowing the hitters down. He has a 3.06 ERA. We still have not had a hit since the first inning. We go down 1-2-3, Dave Lesley taking a 3-2 pitch for strike three to end the game...

Lost - 1 to 0

As weak as our offense has been, this is the first time we have been shutout.

We had 1 hit and made no errors
Houston had 8 hits and made 2 errors

Tom Horn (L 1-2) went 8 innings, allowed 1 run, 7 hits, 1 walk and struck out 2.
LHP Lou Hertzberg pitched 1 scoreless inning, allowed 1 hit and 1 intentional walk.

Steve Fialho (W 5-2) went 7.1 scoreless innings, gave us 1 hit, 5 walks and struck out 3.
RHP Phil DeNui (SV 11) pitched 1.2 scoreless, hitless innings, gave us 2 walks and struck out 1.

LF Jeff Schottler walked 3 times. 1B Jeff Austin had our only hit and stole a base. PH Gordon Saunderson drew a walk.
