Sharks wrap up ’92 draft
7/4/1992

After 2 full days of selections, the 24 NHL teams put the finishing touches on the 120 plus players selected over 5 rounds of the 1992 NHL entry draft.

San Jose again got to work early picking 4th in the second round. After picks from the Lightning, Senators and Flyers, the Sharks selected Canadian centre Ian Laperriere.

“We like his intangibles” added GM Fyvie. “He has talent, but it is off the score sheet where he does his damage.”

Following Laperriere (pictured), the Sharks picked another Russian defenseman Maxim Galanov in the 3rd round, Swiss Goalie Martin Gerber in the 4th, and finally Russian behemoths Andrei Nazarov (6’5”), and Sergei Klimovich (6’3”) in the 5th.

Over the weekend San Jose selected 4 Russians, 1 Canadian, and 1 Swiss national.

Commenting on his selections, GM Fyvie liked the mix. “We got a bit more sandpaper this year. We also wanted to get a goalie in the early going as we don’t have one in the pipeline yet. It’s important to focus on potential team needs, 2 or 3 years down the line, and not just this October.”

The next few months promise to be important for the franchise as they look to make adjustments for the 1992 season.

“Team identity” said Coach/GM Fyvie. “We need to establish a team identity. We’re not the baby in the league anymore. We need to assert our identity.” What that will look like on the ice will greet the Sharks’ faithful in September.
