1981 SAN DIEGO PADRES (41-69) VS 1981 MINNESOTA TWINS (41-68)

GAME ONE
Juan Eichelberger pitched eight innings of shutout ball and the Padres took a 2-0 lead into the bottom of the ninth. But the Twins got three runs off Gary Lucas in the bottom of the ninth to take a 1-0 series lead. With the bases loaded and two out, Gary Ward hit a walk off two-run single.
Final score: 1981 Minnesota Twins 3 1981 San Diego Padres 2.

GAME TWO
The tables reversed. Three Twins relievers combined to blow a 5-1 lead in the top of the ninth.
Final score: 1981 San Diego Padres 6 1981 Minnesota Twins 5.

GAME THREE
There would be no blown leadthis time. The Padres out hit the Twins 15-6 as Chris Welsh allowed just one run in 8.1 innings.

Roger Erickson pitched a complete game shutout. Dave Engle hit a two-run homer.

Dave Engle had a double, home run and three RBI to put the Twins one win away from advancing in the gauntlet.

Steve Mura pitched 7.2 scoreless innings and Ozzie Smith had three hits as the Padres forced a Game 7.

It was fitting that the deciding game came down to a comeback. Trailing 7-1, the Twins scored seven in the sixth to advance to face the 1981 New York Mets.Dave Engle had a bases-loaded double in that sixth inning.
