Detroit, down 1-0 in the bottom of the 3rd scores 4 times to take a 4-1 lead. Leading 5-2 into the 8th they give 2 back but hold on for a 5-4 win. Bob Rhoads wins (18-14) and Rick Lysander saves it for his 8th.
In Cleveland it's a wild one. 3-2 after 1, White Sox up. 5-3 after 3, 5-4 after 4, Sox still leading. Cleveland jumps them in the 7th for 3 to lead 7-5 but the White Sox get 6 in the top of the 8th and 1 in the 9th and then hold off a furious 9th inning Indian rally to win 12-10. Clevelands Tommy Adee goes 2-4 with 2 HR's (30) and 5 RBi's in the loss.
In Chicago the Pirates, behind rookie Brian McCann's 40th HR and Nelson Mathews 4-5 3B, HR (6) and 6 RBI's rout the Cubs while Cincy SP John Patterson overcoms early issues to win his 23rd (23-11) with Steve Crawford saving his 16th, and Cincy clinches at least a tie with 5 games remaining. A Red win or Cub loss in the final 5 games will clinch the NL Pennant for the Reds.
In New York 1B Rich Reese goes 3-5 to move to .329, and now leads Boston's Jimmy Bannon .329-.325 for the batting title.
Sam Thompson went 0-4 in the Cubs loss to drop to .349 while Dodger J.D. Drew was 0-1 in a PH appearance to fall to .352.
