Yesterday was 3B Melvin Rodarte's 32nd birthday.

The San Diego Padres are here to finish up our home stand with a 2 game set. They won 3 of 4 in Los Angeles over the weekend and 5 of their last 6. We lost 2 of 3 to them in San Diego, April 13-15. They are 15th in the PCL in scoring with 3.52 runs per game (Portland is 16th (last) with 3.50). They are 5th in fewest runs allowed with 4.12 per game (Portland is #3 with 3.63). For April, the PCL scored a lot more runs than the NL. The PCL averaged 4.45 runs per game while the NL only averaged 3.79. Together they averaged 4.13, which is close to normal.

San Diego Padres (9-16 .360 6.5 GB in 8th (last) place in the PCL West) at
Portland Beavers (12-12 .500 3 GB in 5th place in the PCL West)

SD: Gordy Albrecht (24-R 1-4 5.67) Rookie vs. POR: Bobby Johnson (22-R 2-2 1.66) Rookie

Albrecht held us to 2 runs and 2 hits and a walk in 6 IP when we faced him in San Diego. He got his only win of the season so far.

Johnson only gave up 1 run in 7 IP at San Diego on April 14, but that was not good enough to get a win.

Top of the First:

Bobby Potts grounds out to short. Rick Potter grounds out to 2nd. Dave Bafaro lines a hit to center. He steals 2nd. Brian Mosca grounds out to the pitcher!

Bottom of the First:
Jack Hinckley flies out to left. Bill Wilson swings at the first pitch and grounds out to 2nd. Don Neumann walks on 4 pitches. Glenn Snowden lines out to right...

Top of the Third:

P Bobby Johnson strikes out the side in order!

Top of the Fourth:
Dave Bafaro leads off with a double to left center. Brian Mosca strikes out! Del Hall swings at the first pitch and homers to center... 2 to 0, Padres. Hall's first home run of the season and the first that P Bobby Johnson has allowed in his Major League career...

Bottom of the Fifth:

With 1 out, Dave Risinger singles, but gets caught stealing. PH Jerry Grant (30-L) lines a hit to center. And then I think the Padres were feeling sorry for our lack of hitting ability and made back-to-back 2 base errors to give us a couple of runs and tie the game at 2 all! First, P Bobby Johnson hit a fly ball to right that Pete Reid had bounce off the heel of his glove to put runners at 2nd and 3rd. Then SS Del Hall threw away a ground ball off the bat of Jack Hinckley and both runners scored!

Top of the Sixth:
Rick Potter leads off with a hit and steals 2nd. Then we walk Dave Bafaro intentionally in front of their cleanup hitter.... Insanity! A wild pitch moves the runners up, so we walk Brian Mosca, too. Now the bases are loaded with no outs and two of them were put there on purpose... Utter nonsense! Dell Hall grounds into a force at home, 3-2, for the first out. But Pete Reid lines a hit to right and two runs score... 4 to 2, Padres and the Pen is up. But the next two make outs.

Top of the Eighth:

New Pitcher: Dick Register (27-L). Dave Bafaro grounds a hit to left. Brian Mosca doubles over the 1st base bag. Del Hall strikes out looking. Pete Reid flies out to left and Bafaro scores without a throw. 5 to 2, Padres. Call to the Bullpen: Jeff Gleason (24-R). Joe Moyers grounds out to short.

Bottom of the Eighth:

Bill Wilson grounds a hit to right. P Gordy Albrecht's day is done. New Pitcher: Ken Baltz (25-R). Don Neumann lines a hit to right. Glenn Snowden walks on 4 pitches to load them up with no outs. Shannon Kuchta grounds into a force at home, 6-2. Doug Dietz fouls out to the left side, the shortstop making the catch... 2 outs. Dave Risinger flies out to left.... We are pitiful...

Top of the Ninth:

With 2 outs, Buddy Potts lines a ball into the left field seats... 6 to 2, Padres.
