The
1970 MLB June Amateur Draft... every season there are booms and busts, put quick frequently there are many surprises come draft time. In 1970 the 1st pick overall was by the San Diego Padres in C
Mike Ivie. Ivie made his debut with the Padres in September 1971. Ivie did play in the MLB from his debut until his final game in May 1983 with the Detroit Tigers. Ivie was only one of five players to hit 2 "Pinch Hit Grand Slam HRs" in the same season. Although Ivie was drafted as a catcher, he started his career with the Padres at 1B. It was an accident with an hunting knife in the 1979 off season forced Ivie to become more of a bench player as he sliced part of his fifth finger on his hand.
The second overall pick in the MLB draft was the Cleveland Indians selecting RHP
Steve Dunning. Dunning started 84 games and pitched in 136 games over 7 years with the Indians, Rangers, Angels, Expos and eventually the Athletics. Dunning went straight from the draft to making his debut with the Indians on June 14th, 1970. On May 11th, 1971, Dunning hit a Grand Slam HR off of Athletics pitcher
Diego Segui, a feat that wasn't accomplished again by an American League pitcher until 2006.
The Montreal Expos selected 3rd, and selected C
Barry Foote. Foote never seen the Majors until 1973 when he got into 6 games for the Expos, he became a regular in 1974. Over 10 years he got into 687 games hitting .230 with 57 HRs and 230 RBIs. Foote's expectations as a catcher for Montreal were so high that the Expos attempted to convert
Gary Carter to RF. By 1976, Carter replaced Foote at catcher and Foote was soon traded.
The Milwaukee Brewers made the 4th pick and grabbed C
Darrell Porter. Porter made his debut with the Brewers in 1971 when he appeared in 22 games, he became a regular with the Brewers in 1973. Over 17 years he hit .247 with 188 HRs and 826 RBIs in 1782 games. Porter was a 4-time All Star, won a World Series with the Cardinals in 1982 and was the World Series MVP. In 1980, Porter checked him self into a drug rehab center after admitting to abuse of drugs such as alcohol, cocaine and marijuana.
The Philadelphia Phillies picked 5th and went with LHP
Mike Martin. Martin was considered a bust, he toiled in between AA and AAA from 1973 until retirement in 1978 taking shots with the Phillies, Dodgers and Cubs.
