are they by chance the same name as an original file of teh game and you recently re-installed for any reason? even just re-install of default data could cause it.

if the same exact name as a file that comes with a game and located in same directory, i.e. replacing one, it will be copied over during a re-install of the game or the default data option.

this will be easy to rule out.

i don't dink aroudn with images much... but make sure itsresolution is allowable in the correct aspect ratio or anythign else the manual may mentions in that regard. i would expect it to just skew images, but it may be picky too. just depends on arbitrary choices by ootp.
