Week 3 Showcase Review

A wild win by the SGBL's 'Wild West'
Salvesen catcher Coy Blazer reminds SGBL why he was picked in 1st round

Annenkov pitcher John Sarich

A packed crowd was on hand in Salvesen to watch this week's featured game, which was also broadcasted live on GSN. Both in-person and television fans were treated to a thriller.

The game started with the visiting Annenkov Vikings initiating total chaos on pitcher Vic Aulet. The top of the 1st was punctuated with a walk, two singles and a triple, which was enough to place Annenkov ahead 3-0 on the scoreboard.

The Aeros needed someone to step up, and they certainly got it. Catcher Coy Blazer drove in Sigurd Neumann in the bottom half of the inning to make it 3-1, then in his next at-bat he drove in John Madsen to make it 3-2 in the 3rd, then a single next time up drove in Madsen again in the 5th to tie the game 3-3.

Blazer was due up again in the 7th, and surely his night would slow down... but he did it again! A single to shallow left scored Meto Christiansen for his 4th RBI in 4 at-bats. The hit was part of a big 7th inning for Salvesen, which gave them a 7-3 lead.

Believe it or not, that healthy lead did not last for long.

Annenkov finally fought back in the top of the 8th, pummeling a tiring Vic Aulet, who was still on the mound for the Aeros. Bear Kent cranked a two-run home run, and the two Willies (Perez and Hernandez) combined for another run scored before Aeros Manager Frederick Jensen finally gave Aulet the rest of the evening off. Despite the new pitcher, Annenkov tacked on another run in the inning to complete the comeback. It was now a 7-7 tie in the middle of the 8th inning.

It all boiled down to the bottom of the 9th.

On the mound for the Vikings was young fireballer Ross Richardson. A 25-year-old with a loaded cannon for a left arm, but still trying to control that power... and he would face Salvesen's top of the order.

Leading off the bottom of the 9th was Aaron Atkinson, who fouled off a string of Richardson's fastballs, and finally hit a single after forcing him to throw some of his sliders. Madsen popped out, then Christiansen also singled, and then walked Coy Blazer (there he is again!) to load the bases with only one out.

Then, the 41 year old switch-hitter "Old Man" Finlay Kerrigan came up to bat. All he had to do was make contact and the game was theirs. He obliged by popping up, and Atkinson tagged up for the winning run.

A hard-fought game which also garnered the highest ratings in GSN's short history. Truly a memorable finish!

Final score : Annenkov 7, Salvesen 8

The player of the game was a lock : Coy Blazer was given the nod, and deservedly so! He went 3-for-4 with 1 walk, and 4 RBI's.
