SGBL Championship Trophy gets a name!

SGBL players will be trying to win the 'Antarctic Cup'

There had been a buzz in the air around the island for the last few weeks. In June, the South Georgia Baseball League unveiled the design of what would be the league's championship trophy. At the time, no name for the trophy was announced.

Baseball fans nation-wide began speculating about what the eventual name of the trophy would be. Some were convinced the league would give it a corporate name, such as the 'Graham Fuels Trophy presented by Zinasco', or the 'Watson Insurance Cup'. "I can't see why they would pass up a chance to cash in on a sponsorship deal!" said one unnamed fan. Others theorized that it wouldn't have an actual name at all, at least not in the short-term. "Perhaps it won't be named anything for a while until they can name it after someone? It's an idea, but they might have to wait a while for that to become feasible" said another fan, with a chuckle.

All the speculation was put aside last night, as the SGBL announced that the league's trophy will be named simply the "Antarctic Cup".

League Commissioner Keith Unger

Speaking to reporters at a press conference in Grytviken, SGBL Commissioner Keith Unger explained why the league decided against a sponsor-related name :

"Of course we considered the idea of finding a corporate partner for the naming of the Cup, but in the end we decided against it. We want the trophy's name to be permanent, and to stand the test of time. We hope it will become a symbol of our league and of South Georgia in general. We want children and youth to aspire to play in our league, and to lift the trophy as Antarctic Cup champion!"

The naming of the trophy arrives just in time, as the SGBL playoffs are set to kick off tomorrow night. In the North Division Series, the Nemessey Giants prepare to host the Salvesen Aeros. In the South Division Series, the Pajt-Vorten Comets visit the Annenkov Vikings. Both series are a 'best-of-7' format, and both opening games are scheduled for 7:05pm.
