McCarthy's hit streak ends at 20, but Pintails lose 5-2

Shane Yarborough, Barrington Times
June 16th, 2015

A difficult first inning for pitcher Walt Trzepizur was eventually too much for the Pintails to overcome, as they lost 5-2 to the Pajt-Vorten Comets today at Invescor Pintails Stadium.

Facing a 3-0 deficit in the first inning, the Pintails struggled to gain momentum all game, and couldn't produce the runs needed to catch up. In the fifth, Alan Bearcroft of the Comets smashed a 2-run home run to make the lead 5-1, and that was more than enough to seal the win. One of the only bright lights offensively for the Pintails was left fielder Zu Nicoll, who went 4-for-4 with an RBI.

In the other dugout, there was also disappointment, as Steve McCarthy's 20-game hitting streak was snapped. He was only 3 games away from equaling the league record of 23, set a month ago by Batallion's Angus McDaniel.

The big center fielder from Northern Ireland failed to get a hit in 4 at-bats in the game, but Pajt-Vorten came out the winner, which, to his teammates, is more important to him. Speaking to the Times after the game, teammate Alan Bearcroft commented "The streak was not necessarily as big a deal to Steve. He's not that type of bloke. He just wants to help the team win games, full stop."

Currently McCarthy is batting .318 with 78 hits and 10 home runs. He has knocked in 37 runs and scored 37 times.

The second game of this series is scheduled for tomorrow evening at 7:05pm. Barrington sits third in the South Division, with an even 33-33 record. Pajt-Vorten sit just above them in second place and in a playoff spot at the moment, at 37-30.

Frederick Seong (6-3) is scheduled to start for the Pintails. Cam Lambert (4-1) will be on the mound for the Comets.
