I ran a test sim and it looks like you can switch to auto historical transactions in 1901. However i would advice checking the rosters or manually signing free agents and then turning it over to the computer on opening day of 1901.
You may want to monitor for the first few years after changing but im pretty certain it would be just like starting a league in 1901.
