2055

The Winnipeg Eagles began the draft by taking Dolly Summers out of UCF. The starting pitcher went 12-1 with a 1.26 ERA in her senior year. Their 2054 first overall pick, Jay-Jay Moore, spent the entire season at Winnipeg’s rookieball affiliate in Gatineau, Quebec. She hit .300 for the team.

Richmond won the East with 94 wins, beating Charlotte to the division title by one game. Three other teams from the East (Bristol, New York and Cape Cod) also made the playoffs. Huntington dominated with a 103-win season. They were joined in the postseason by Beaver. Provo won the West at 88-63, winning a tie-break fixture against Anchorage. The Utah-based team were the only West Division team to make the postseason.

Huntington, Bristol and New York all swept while Cape Cod beat Richmond in three. Both semi-final series went the distance, with Huntington and New York winning their respective series 3-2. Huntington won swept New York in the trophy series, meaning it had now been 22 years since New York had won it all.
While Elena Cortez lead once again in batting average (.437), there was a tie for home run champion. Both Kelly Lasky and Sian Mathis hit 53 during the season. However, Mathis’ 163 RBIs were enough for her to take that title for herself. Andi Carnini of Huntington was the best pitcher by ERA at 2.43 as well as the winningest pitcher with 22 in 30 starts. Pomona Laney Modugno was the strikeout with 192.

Huntington’s Hannah Ming won Rookie of the Year (as well as WBLA semifinals MVP). The Taiwanese-American hit .311 with 31 home runs. Andi Carnini won the Madeeha Baqri Award while Elena Cortez won her 12th MVP award.

The biggest retirement was Marcia Colon, who retired at the age of 38 after 2603 games. She hit .356 in her career and won the 2042 MVP award.

Ft Wayne (New York) won the Prem while the Spokane Dukes (Hastings) won the Rookieball.

There was one final piece of tragic news. On January 5th, Elena Cortez was involved in a significant car accident while driving through Kansas. No timetable was set on her return, given the severity of her injuries.
