Opening Day! The Metroplex Miners have traveled to the Eternal City to take on the Gladiators. Today's pitcher will be Alfred Eickhoff.

The starting lineup today is:
  • LF Serge Besnard
  • SS Isaac Greenhill
  • CF Guillaume Grenier
  • 1B Lester Dibble
  • 2B Scott Goossens
  • RF Julien Riviere
  • DH Andreas Winkler
  • C Camillo Moschino
  • 3B Dirk Ehrmann

This lineup is somewhat surprising, as it contains some players we though would start with the Hamburg Commanders in the Nations level AAA league.

Owen MacArthur is on the mound for the Gladiators and the visiting Miners are on offense.

He makes short work of the first three Miners.

Eickhoff steps up and in his second pitch delivers a sinker to Helmut Böttcher for the 1st HR of the league! That's not the start the Miners staff had in mind.

Slowly he shakes of the opening day jitters, but has to see another opposing player cross the home plate before the inning is over.

In the second inning MacArthur walks the HR threat Lester Dibble an makes short work of Goosens and Riviere. But Andreas Winkler hits for the first RBI double of the franchise and Dibble scores!

Moschino is out on a ground ball to.

2-1 Gladiators

In the third inning Serge Besnard hits a sacrifice flyball for a score. 2 - 2.

In the bottom half Alfred Eickhoff finally gets his first strikeout vs. Karlheinz Zeller.

In the top of the fifth MacArthur slowly loses control after 57 pitches and walks Moschino, but manages to pull through. The Miners take
the lead in the 6th, but Karlheinz Zeller ties it again in the bottom of the ninth with and single RBI HR against CL Declan Blakey on the mound and still no Outs, in the 10th they inch in another run and win their home opener in a thrilling way.

The trip to Rome entirely proves to be a disappointing one, as the following two games fall to the Gladiators as well 1-3 and 4-6. Says projected superstar Grenier:

"It is absolutely frustrating, being so close and then to lose them all. Maybe we are all a bit awed by this grand city - many of us got to see the collisseum and the forum romanum for the first time in our lives. Everything is all so new for everybody."

Hopes are high for the second series, this time at home against the London Dreadnoughts.
