1904 WASHINGTON SENATORS VS 1981 CHICAGO CUBS
These are last two teams left in the gauntlet who won less than 40 games. The Cubs are the second team in the gauntlet from the 1981 split season strike year. The winner will face the expansion 1962 New York Mets.

GAME ONE
Casey Patten pitched eight solid innings to lead the Senators to an opening game win on the road. He got great offensive support as the Senators collected 13 hits. Bill Coughlin led the hit parade with three singles.
Final score: 1904 Washington Senators 5 1981 Chicago Cubs 1.

GAME TWO
The Senators end up taking both games in Chicago and head home with a 2-0 lead in the series. Bill Coughlin broke a 2-2 tie with a two-run double in the top of the sixth and the Senators put it away in the eighth thanks to two Cubs errors.
Final score: 1904 Washington Senators 7 1981 Chicago Cubs 2.

GAME THREE
The Senators are one win away from sweeping this series and winning the Under 40 Wins Bracket of the gauntlet. The Senators scored all five runs in the third inning. The Cubs committed three more errors and have not scored more than two runs in any of the games of this series.
Final score: 1904 Washington Senators 5 1981 Chicago Cubs 2.

GAME FOUR
The Cubs found some offense to stay alive. Leon Durham went 3 for 4, including a two-run triple in the top of the seventh with the Cubs clinging to a 4-3 lead.

GAME FIVE
Still facing elimination, the Cubs scored twice in the top of the fifth to take a 2-0 lead. The Senators answered with three in the bottom of the fifth to take the lead for good. The Cubs were held to two runs or less in all four losses.
Final score: 1904 Washington Senators 5 1981 Chicago Cubs 2.
