1995 NHL Regular Season
The 48 game, 3 and a half month schedule begins with
Wayne Gretzky tying
Gordie Howe in points with 1857.
Gretzky is now 68 points behind
Guy Lafleur for the all time lead. I wasn’t sure anyone would be passing
Gordie Howe after he retired, but here we are, seeing
Howe in third. Lets make this a big list…Here is a updated look at the top 40 scorers in NHL history!
Numbers 41 and 42,
Bill Barber, and
Dale Hunter, are the only other players to reach 1000. So that’s 42, 1000 points scorers in NHL history so far. Superstars like
Maurice Richard, Milt Schmidt, Ted Lindsay, Toe Blake, Syl Apps, and
Rick Middleton never got to 1000!
Another big milestone is reached early in the season.
Dino Ciccarelli, of the
Dallas Stars, has scored his 700th goal!! That’s a lot if your counting!
Dino is the 4th player in NHL history to score 700. The top 3 are the first 3 in that list above this story. 700 is a pretty legendary number. Congrats to
Dino!
700 goals!
As enter the middle of the season, the big surprise is how bad the
Oilers are playing. I’ve been touting the
Oilers as a team to watch for a few seasons now, and they have two straight great seasons. They sit at 6-11-2, out of a playoff spot so far.
Brian Leetch hasn’t played a game this season, but is due back in a few weeks. Still, missing
Leetch shouldn’t make them terrible.
Renberg isn’t scoring, and
Hextall isn’t stopping anything. In this short season, they don’t have anymore time to figure it out. It’s pretty much win now or miss the playoffs!
Renberg is having trouble repeating his breakout season.
We have reached the trade deadline of this short season, and the
Anaheim Mighty Ducks do not have a win! They stand at 0-22-4!! They have just 35 goals scored in 26 games this year.
Eric Lindros has 6 goals and 14 points, leading the team. His potential has fallen from 4.5 stars to 3.5. Maybe playing with no one has hurt his development. The
Ducks need to find some more talent to play with their hopeful franchise player. They have no one at the moment.
Lindros is struggling, while his team is winless!
At the other end of the spectrum, the
Winnipeg Jets have emerged with just 3 losses in their first 32 games!! The
Jets are having financial issues, but it hasn’t effected the on ice product.
Dominik Hasek is putting up numbers he haven’t seen since
Terry Sawchuk retired. A 1.62 GAA with a .923 SP!
Alex Mogilny has become a MVP candidate. The
Jets are soaring into the playoffs with the leagues best record!
Hasek is stopping everything!
Anaheim wins!! The
Mighty Ducks have finally won a game!! On April 7th, in their 34th game of the season, the
Ducks score a season high 6 goals, and defeat the
Stars 6-2! How about them
Mighty Ducks!
Celebrate!!
On April 23rd,
Wayne Gretzky scored three goals against the
Pittsburgh Penguins. His 2nd goal tied
Guy Lafleur’s points record, while his third, broke it!!
Wayne Gretzky is now the all time leading scorer in NHL history!!!
The best!
Final Standings
Yep, right after praising the
Jets, they go on a huge losing streak. They lose 10 of their last 13 games, and fall out of first place. I am the jinx. Unlike the
Jets, the
Oilers finished the season on fire, making their slow start a very distant memory and winning their division!
For the 2nd straight year, the
Capitals miss the playoffs because of the new top 8 playoff format. Fourth place in the Atlantic hasn’t been good enough.
The
Islanders win the president’s trophy again. Will they finally make a Stanley Cup final?
Anaheim goes 2-39-7, for a winning percentage of around 4 percent. Including ties, it’s around 11 percent. The 1976
Atlanta Flames went 7-61-12, which is a winning percentage of 8.75 percent. With ties included it, 16.25. So, with that information, I proclaim the
1995 Mighty Ducks of Anaheim as the worst team in NHL history!!
34 year old
Wayne Gretzky had another amazing year. He keeps getting better.
Gretzky was far and away the best player in the league this year. He put up a 84 game rating, which doesn’t really happen at his age. 79 points led the league by a lot.
In a trade I missed last year, 3rd overall pick
Martin St. Louis was sent to
Hartford.
St. Louis just played his first NHL game at the end of the year and picked up 2 points. He’s on the roster for the playoffs, and is rated well enough that he could be difference maker to help
Gretz and
Mess get back to a cup!
After last year record setting season,
Ray Bourque settles down with a pedestrian 38 point season. Now, ofcourse that’s still really good, but it’s nowhere close to 124 points!
