You can import previous games through the demo versions (you can find them here:
https://www.ootpdevelopments.com/ootp-prior-version/). So to bring a league from 17 to 20, you need to download the 18 and 19 demos and just do it in a couple steps.
I'm of the opinion that every version is worth it, but I might be a little biased
