Sharks feed on ‘Hawks for first road win
10/13/1991 2145 CT

It was another first, in a season full of firsts, as San Jose won their first road game against the Chicago Blackhawks 3-1.

It was the second game in as many nights for the Sharks who came into Chicago still hurting from their 4-2 loss against Brett Hull and the Blues. But thanks to a standout performance from Stephane Richer (pictured), who has scored in 5 straight games, and his wingman Lebeau, the Sharks managed to climb back to an even record.

“We’re very happy to split these two nights with a win here in Chicago”. Noted Coach Fyvie. “Berthiaume, Richer and Lebeau really carried it for us. I think we caught the ‘Hawks a bit off guard. We were hungry tonight.”

Opening the scoring was Chicago’s newest Russian import Valerie Kamensky who scored his 4th of the year at 5.58 of the first. But that was all for the Blackhawks as the Sharks proceeded to score 3 unanswered goals by Lebeau (his first of the year), David Volek (his first of the year and on the powerplay), and Richer who now leads the team with 5 goals and 4 assists in just 6 games.

The game’s 3rd star Daniel Berthiaume was in net for his second start of the year. He was happy for the result. “Obviously as a backup you suspect you’ll get your starts on the back end of consecutive games, you just hope you’re ready and the boys have something left in the tank to give you. We were great in all 3 zones tonight.” Berthiaume made 29 saves for a 96.7 SV%.

Chicago was 0-2 with the mad advantage tonight while San Jose went 1-8 with David Volek’s first of the year.

Notable scratches tonight were Jeff Odgers, Peter Popovic, and Brian Lawton. 18 year old rookie Scott Niedermayer was back on the 3rd pair for just his 3 start of the season as he and 23 year old Swede Popovic appear to be sharing duties.

San Jose continues their road trip by heading back West to face the Kings in Los Angeles Oct 16, and Chicago will face the defending Stanley Cup Champion Oilers Oct 17 here in Chicago.
