Columbus Blue Jackets (9-4-2) at Montreal Canadiens (14-4-0)

Montreal is 4-4 since starting the season 10-0 and seem to be struggling to score goals. Tonight we have the Blue Jackets at the Bell Center. Montreal still holds a 4 point lead on the Bruins, but the Bruins have a game in hand. Montreal get about 30 shots a game and this ranks them 14th in the NHL. Defensively, although they did give up 10 goals in 2 nights coming into this game, they give up 27 shots a night which ranks them 3rd in the NHL.

Montreal LW Robert Hendriksson is born in Gavle, Sweden. A offensive forward and strong playmaker, he is playing on the 1st line with a playmaking, speedy forward role. Hendriksson was signed as a free agent in June of 1981 and made his NHL debut with Montreal on October 24th, 1981. This year in 18 games he has 2 goals and 10 assists for 12 points. In 155 career NHL games he has 25 goals and 54 points with 41 PIMs.

The Blue Jackets are 4th in the East with 20 poiints, 8 back of Montreal. The Blue Jackets are good at both ends of the rink, they rank 6th in the NHL with 33 shots per game. Defensively they rank 9th by giving up 29 shots a game.

Columbus will start G Michael Woodlford, he has 7 wins in 12 games this year with a 2.48 GAA and a .914 save %. Last year he had 15 wins with a 2.57 GAA and a .916 save % in 25 games for the Blue Jackets. Montreal goes with G Wilf Nestor, he has 12 wins with a 1.78 GAA and a .931 save % in 15 games.

Columbus gets on the board 1st, RW Allen Lanning gets his 2nd of the year at 15:39 to make it 1-0. The shots end up 14 to 10 in favor of the Blue Jackets as they carried most of the momentum.

Montreal ties the score 1-1 at 3:51 when LD Dennis Engstrom gets his 1st of the year. Columbus is still carrying the play through most of the 2nd period. The shots were 16 to 6 for the Blue Jackets in the period. Nestor holding the Canadiens in it.

Montreal had a better 3rd period out shooting Columbus 12 to 8 but the after 3 periods it is still tied 1-1 and we are off to overtime. Montreal has had to kill 9 PPs so far in this game.

In overtime it was all Montreal as they had the only 3 shots of the period, but could not put one past Woolford. Columbus scores the only goal in the shoot out for the win. The final shots on goal were 38-31 for Columbus. Columbus was 0 for 10 on the PP including one in the overtime, Montreal was 0 for 4.

Columbus RW Allen Lanning was the 1st star with his goal. The 36 year old now has 2 goals and 2 assists for 4 points in 16 games. Last season he had 14 goals and 29 points in 75 games for Columbus and Toronto.
