Good question! Can you give me an example of a release and sign? Lots of compromise contracts are done around arbitration but I can't think of a player who was released outright. Not offering arbitration results in FA. I've done that in the game, but it's not the same thing.

I'm going to guess no simply based on the likelihood that the CBA would have that covered. Put another way if this was ok and worked we would see it all the time.
