2077 Season (6/25 – 6/27)

Orlando City (37-35, .514, 5th NL East) @ Los Angeles Lakers (47-25, .653, 1st NL West)
As one of five clubs in the NL East with a .500 or better record, City stands out as the one most likely to spring a leak in their water wings and sink to the bottom… they have a +2 rDiff, are +5 against the Pythagorean, and, despite winning their last two games, are 4-6 for their last 10… their best player, LF Otis Murray, is on the shelf for at least two more weeks, and, in his absence, their offense has started to reveal their true selves – 10th in OPS, power-starved at 11th in HRs, and 10th in wOBA – theirs is a machine that sputters more than it purrs. The Pitching has been good, though, with the Starters acquitting themselves nicely despite being surrounded by mediocrity – of course, the fact that they’re 12th in errors committed doesn’t give any of their hurler's confidence that their efforts will be rewarded on defense. Orlando is a club in flux – it’s hard to understand what it is that they are going for this season after trading away their assets for okay returns in the form of some less than sure-thing prospects… they haven’t made the playoffs since 2074 and they aren’t likely to break that trend in 2077, so, for now, they are just another club mired in a sea of mediocrity and hoping that the coasties will show up soon…

73 of 162: KJ Judd (2-5, 4.02) @ Dejuan Burns (7-4, 3.29)
Win, 3-1
. A walk-off win, at home, in extras – Dontrell Gay hit his 4th dinger of the season, a 2-run shot off of RP Radoslav Borovsky in the bottom of the 11th, to secure a sweet home victory for the Lakers faithful… this one was tightly contested, not much offensively worth highlighting – Ethan stole a bag, Gay’s GWHR came with 2-outs on the board, Burns only gave up a single run – Barbaccia struggled to get the win (of course), but Ferdinand was there to mop it up and earned his 4th win of the season… I’ve really fought putting him in the rotation thus far – may have to put him on the bump in an “opener” capacity soon just to see how that plays out…

Elsewhere: Pittsburgh’s 1B Ian Hanan went 2 for 3 with a GRAND SLAM and 4 walks in the Steelers’ 7-2 road victory over the Vancouver Whitecaps in extras – Hanan’s GS came in the top of the 13th and was all they’d need to finally send this one to the showers… relief pitcher, Hunter Thomas, who is now 0-5 with a 4.65 ERA, gave up 5 runs in the 13th frame and was saddled with the loss. Thomas won the 2076 IL Democratic League Reliever of the Year Award but has struggled so far in the Majors… In Bush League news – 25-year old Hagerstown 1B, Micky King, went 3 for 5 with a double, 2 homers, 4 ribbies, and 3 runs in the Hummers 10-8 win over the Nolanville ‘Nauts – curious to see when a Major League club comes calling for this guy as the $500K entry fee seems like a small price to pay for a guy who could develop into a bootleg Ethan Mullens in the right system – maybe it’s the twisty ‘stache stylings that are hold him back, too dorky for primetime.

Also, BIG news out of Houston… with RF Elias Baron going on the 10-day IL, DEREK JETER will have an opportunity to join the big club – his contract was purchased from Salt Lake today, and he will join the Dynamo on the road in Chicago immediately.

74 of 162: Mike Clendenin (3-2, 3.96) @ Paul Yeager (11-2, 3.09)
Loss, 2-0
. Another tight ballgame, but this time there’d be no magic for the La La’s… Clendenin gets the CG, 7-hit, shutout win for City while Paul Yeager gave up 2 runs over 7 innings of work with 10 K’s… apparently, the injury to Otis Murray was overstated as he returned to the lineup today for Orlando and went 2 for 3 with a solo-HR… Rajkumar struck out three times, Messick GIDP, and Voorhis went 0 for 4. We were terrible at the plate tonight and sent 47,583 fans home tonight feeling like they wasted their money on a ticket, parking, and over-priced concessions…

75 of 162: Cathal Magill (7-1, 2.81) @ Newton Weiser (9-3, 2.93)
Loss, 6-2
. Ouch. Three straight days of fierce pitching from the opposition where we could only muster one magical moment… CG, 4-hit, 2-run effort from Magill, while Newton could only manage 6.2 with 5 runs earned… Hrs for Otto & Voorhis, a double for HONG, and an error from Hamza – plus, 10 total strikeouts for the club with two each for Otto, Ethan, and PEPPER. Not our finest hour, that much is clear.

Elsewhere: Carolina’s SS Larry Wronski went 4 for 6 with two doubles, a homer, 5 RBIs and 2 runs in their 13-10 win over Golden State and RF Timmy Simpson hit a 3-run jack to add to the fun… our lead over the Suns is sitting a 3 ½, so that doesn’t make me happy, and Brooklyn is now in a two-way tie with STL for 1st in the NL East while Pittsburgh & Montreal are only a game off that pace… Derek didn’t crack the lineup in his first day up with Houston – they played a close one against the Fire (a 4-3 Dynamo win), so none of the reserves managed to get in the game…
