Dallas Stars (16-8-0) at Montreal Canadiens (13-9-1)

Montreal will face the Dallas Stars for the first time this season. The Stars have a 3-point lead on the Jets in the Central Division. Montreal will be happy to have Batsaikhany Vanoosten back in the line up. With the injury to Lorenzo Bocci, Montreal will be sporting an new first line of LW Vanoosten, C Hughes and RW Ladd.

Dallas is led by RW Domenico Giunti. The 27 year old has 12 goals and 28 points in 24 games this season. The native of Quebec City, QC is in his 3rd season as a Star, he has 51 goals, 101 assists for 152 points with 190 PIMs and a +30 rating. Giunti has terrific hockey sense and is a great playmaker.

At RD the Stars have 34 year old Tom Welsham. Welsham has 3 goals and 7 points this season in 24 games. Welsham is best discribed as a strong defensive style defenseman. In 183 career NHL games, all with Dallas he has 23 goals, 66 assists for 89 points with 156 PIMs and a +60 rating.

Another Quebec born player playing close to home tonight is C Cedrick Gauvin. The 34 year old has 5 goals and 12 points in 24 games this year. A strong two way player with above average playmaking ability, he has demostrated his skills on 3 different teams in 3 year. He started his career in 80-81 as a Capital and spent much of the season on the injury reserve list. In 81-82 he was with the Oilers after being traded and then became a Star after another trade in the off season. In 143 career NHL games, Gauvin has 34 goals, 50 assists for 84 points with 233 PIMs and a +37 rating.

Dallas will start G Craig Amies, he has a .904 save % in 13 starts including 8 wins. Canadiens will start G Mike Blackshear, he holds a .883 save % with 11 wins in 19 starts.

Montreal didn't register a shot until nearly 6 minutes into the game. It was Stars C Domenico Giunti opening the scoring at 12:11 with his 13th of the year. Shortly after the goal, C Deric Dufour left the game with an apparent shoulder injury. Montreal ties it up at 17:53 when rookie LW Jiri Bohm gets his 1st career NHL goal. The periods ends tied 1-1 with the Stars out shooting Montreal 12 to 9.

Montreal gains the lead at 4:52 of the 2nd when RD Marek Bartolcic gets his 3rd of the year. The Stars tie it up at 2-2 when LD Javier Garcia scores his 2nd of the season at 18:04. The Stars out shoot Montreal 12 to 10 in the 2nd and both teams are 0 for 2 on the PP.

Dallas scores early in the 3rd as LD Javier Garcia gets his 2nd of the night at 0:37. Montreal gets an opportunity on the PP at 10:46 of the 3rd. The only get 1 shot on the PP. Montreal does make it 3-3 when RW Al Ladd gets his 6th of the year at 14:13. Dallas takes the lead again at 15:04 when LW David Lambert gets his 4th of the season. Montreal carried the momentum late in the period but could not get the tieing goal.

Dallas LD Javier Garcia was named the 1st star with his 2 goals. The 20 year old Garcia has 3 goals and 19 points in 25 games. Garcia is in his 2nd season as a Star. In 72 NHL games, he has 19 career goals, 52 assists for 71 points with 36 PIMs and a +18 rating. Dallas selected Garcia in the 1st round, 24th overall in the 1981 NHL Entry Draft after he finished his junior career in the WHL for the Everett Silvertips.
