1931 NHL Offseason News and Notes

Montreal Maroons center Joe Primeau will take home his second straight Hart Trophy. The league MVP scored 19 times this season, good for 6th in the league, and finished 2nd in assists with 32. He led Montreal to their third straight first place finish in the Canadian division.

Here are the other award winners. It's a Maroon's sweep! They didn't win the big prize though.

Here is the first team NHL all-star squad. I deleted the news item before I could screen shot the 2nd team. Oops.

The Philadelphia Quakers owners decide they are losing too much money and the team can’t continue. The option to move back to Pittsburgh is alive for a few years, but they can’t get a new arena built. Ottawa lost around 60 grand over the previous two seasons. The owners decide to take the year off with hopes of returning soon.

Ok, so this is big news for the league. This means there are a lot of talented players without contracts to play next year. Ottawa had a lot of talent, and Philly just played in the Cup finals. There are some excellent players available on the free agent market starting now!!!

Teams didn’t waste any time. Dit Clapper, the most talented player available, goes to the Leafs, who could really use a boost to their d core. Montreal gets 29 year old Alec Connell, who I guess will now compete with Tiny Thompson for starts. Hap Day also goes to Montreal. He’s 30 now, and might be slowing down some, but he’s still a valuable player to have. The Habs complete their “Ottawa takeover” signing Frank Boucher. He will be the best 2nd line center in all of hockey. Howie Morenz is still the #1 guy.

The Canadiens make a nice trade.

With 3 starting goalies, something had to give. Hainsworth still has star quality ratings. New York should start him as much as they can. He’s 38 though, how much can he really have left! Montreal did good to get a 1st round pick for him.

Gordie Drillon is the first player taken in the NHL draft. The top 3 picks all look pretty good. Chicago needs Drillon to develop fast, as they have no chance to win at the moment.

Montreal takes Pete Kelly with the 6th overall pick, acquired for George Hainsworth.

No logo and uniform changes for the 1931-32 season.
