DAL: Dick Funicello (36-R 5-4 4.31) vs. POR: Joe Hoehn (27-R 0-3 9.42)

We have never faced Funicello as a starter. He had a save in relief against us last year. He is 0-2 in his last 3 starts with 12 R (11 ER) allowed in 14.1 IP.

Hoehn last started for the Beavers on May 27. He was 3-0 for the Mounties since then.

Brian Mitchell flares a hit to left center. Dave Risinger beats out an infield hit. Fernando Martinez strikes out looking... Glenn Snowden lines a hit to left and Mitchell heads home....safe! 1 to 0, Beavers! Fernando Mexicano strikes out... Jim Shippy grounds out to short.

Bottom of the Second:
Rich Cruz walks on 4 pitches. Juan Rojas grounds into a force at 2nd, 1-6. P Joe Hoehn bunts Rojas to 2nd. Brian Mitchell lines a hit to right, too hard for Rojas to score. Dave Risinger bounces an easy one back to the mound, but P Dick Funicello makes a bad throw to 1st and Rojas scores! 2 to 0, Beavers! Fernando Martinez swings at the first pitch and grounds a hit to right and Mitchell heads home....safe on a close play, but Mitchell stays prone near the plate and Trudy the Trainer has to go out... 3 to 0, Beavers. Glenn Snowden lines a hit to center and Risinger scores! 4 to 0, Beavers! Fernando Mexicano hits a home run to left!!! 7 to 0, Beavers! Mr. Funicello is relieved. New Pitcher: Steve Velazquez (26-R) with a 2.10 ERA in 21.1 IP. Jim Shippy flies out to left. Jack Hinckley will take over in center.

Top of the Third:
Dave Winchester leads off with a swing at a 3-2 pitch and hits a home run to left... 7 to 1, Beavers.

Bottom of the Seventh:
On the Hill: Mark Alders (29-R), beginning his third inning of work. He holds us to 1 hit and no runs, the first inning we have failed to score in this game. The score is currently, 17 to 2, Beavers!!!!

Joe Hoehn (W 1-3) went 6 innings, allowed 2 runs , 7 hits, 1 home run, 2 walks and struck out no one. At bat, he had a hit.
RHP Jim Kokos went 2 perfect innings and struck out 1.
RHP Jennings Sims, in his season debut, pitched a scoreless inning and allowed 1 hit.

Dick Funicello (L 5-5) went 1.2 innings, gave us 7 runs (1 earned), 7 hits, 1 home run, 1 walk and struck out 2.

CF Brian Mitchell went 2 for 2 and scored 2 runs. CF Jack Hinckley had 3 hits and scored 2 runs. 2B Dave Risinger had 3 hits with a double and scored 3 runs. LF Fernando Martinez had 3 hits, scored 3 runs and had 2 RBI. 1B Glenn Snowden had 4 hits with 2 doubles and a walk, scored 3 runs and had 3 RBI. RF Fernando Mexicano hit 2 home runs, drew 2 walks and set a new PCL record and tied the Major League mark with 8 RBI. C Jim Shippy had 2 hits and an RBI. 3B Rich Cruz had 2 hits and a walk, scored a run and had an RBI.

Now to the bad news: Trudy's report on Brian Mitchell is a hairline fracture in his foot that will see him miss 4 to 5 weeks.... Third injury this season... Injury prone, it seems... Just when I was starting to fall in love....
