Portland Beavers (19-22 .463 9.5 GB tied for 6th place in the PCL West) at
San Diego Padres (21-20 .512 7.5 GB tied for 3rd place in the PCL West)

POR: Rondey Moe (26-R Season debut) vs. SD: John Riley (26-R 5-3 1.74) All-Star

Moe makes his Beaver debut today. Truth be told, he was mostly singled out for trade because of his name. But he could be a very good pitcher if he would quit walking so any batters. His last start in A Ball was a 4 hit shutout with no walks and 9 SO. He hit .233 for the Pirates last year.

Riley is their #1 starter and he is currently 2nd in the PCL in ERA. He has pitched shutouts in 2 of his last 3 starts and only gave up 3 hits and 1 run in 8 IP in the other. He has won his last 4 starts. He was 2-0 in 4 starts against us last season. We only scored 4 runs in 35 IP (1.03 ERA).

Game Start: 7:05 PM
Ballpark: Petco Park
Weather: 77 F, Clear Skies, with an 8 MPH wind blowing out to right
Attendance: 20,388

Top of the First:
Brian Mitchell varies his routine and grounds out to 1st, unassisted, this time. Rick Woodell grounds out to short. Shannon Kuchta swings at a 3-2 pitch and grounds out to short.

Bottom of the First:
Pete Reid strikes out looking! Norman Darcy swings at the first pitch and triples to center... Dave Bafaro grounds out to short and Darcy scores. 1 to 0, Padres. Now there is another complaint I have with our manager: with John Riley starting for them, we should not be conceding any runs.... Buddy Potts walks on 4 pitches. He tries to steal, but Jim Shippy guns him down! P Rondey Moe is excellent at holding runners close at 1st; he has had a lot of experience....

Bottom of the Second:

With 1 out, P Rondey Moe walks the bases loaded... P John Riley lines a 3-1 pitch to right for a hit and a run scores. 2 to 0, Padres. Pete Reid flies out to right and Rick Potter tags up at 3rd and heads home, but RF Fernando Mexicano throws to 2nd, where he doubles off Mark Coronato!! The run does NOT count!

Bottom of the Third:

Norman Darcy leads off with a walk and steals 2nd. But their 3-4-5 hitters all make outs!

Top of the Seventh:

Shannon Kuchta leads off with a bouncer into left for a hit, only our third of the game. Fernando Mexicano takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4. With 2 outs, Don Neumann grounds a hit to right, but Kuchta stops at 3rd... Rich Cruz grounds out to 2nd...

Lost - 2 to 0

3 shutouts in his last 4 starts for P John Riley...

We had 5 whole hits and made no errors
San Diego had 6 hits and made no errors

Rondey Moe (L 0-1) went 6.2 innings, allowed 2 runs, 5 hits, 5 walks and struck out 3.
LHP Dick Register faced 2 batters and got 1 out and gave up 1 hit.
RHP Jim Kokos faced 1 batter and retired him.
LHP Chuck Purnell faced 2 batters and got them both out with 1 strikeout.

John Riley (W 6-3) went 9 shutout innings (CG), gave us 5 hits, 2 walks and struck out 7. 132 pitches. At bat, he had a hit and an RBI.

CF Brian Mitchell hit a double. RF/LF Fernando Mexicano hit a double and drew a walk.
