Yaz the Free Agent?

Carl Yastrzemski is about to begin his seventh season in Boston and with the new free agency rules it could be his last. The Players Union got a huge labor victory this offseason as the reserve clause was abolished setting the stage for the era of free agency. Yaz is 27 years old and entering his prime and because of his service time he will be granted free agency at the end of the 1967 season.

His next salary could set the market but nobody is quite sure just how high that market will be. The Red Sox reportedly have met with Yaz's agents about a long term deal but nothing appears to be imminent. One source close to the negotiations said Yastrzemski is looking for a ten year deal.

Lee Stange, John Wyatt, Don McMahon and Don Demeter are also set to be free agents at the end of the season for the Red Sox.

The Sox will open the 1967 season at home tomorrow as Jim Lonborg gets the start for the Red Sox. He will face the White Sox at Fenway and they will send Gary Peters to the mound
