04/12/1973 - Matthews Sr on Fire: 5-for-5 for San Francisco, but Astros Still Win ina Rout

It was a high-five day for Gary Matthews Sr, at least for a while.

The San Francisco left fielder got plenty of them from his teammates when he reached the five-hit milestone during today's game against the Houston Astros, but they were in short supply at the end, as Houston took a 16-6 win. Matthews Sr finished with an impressive 5-for-5 line, but the Giants couldn't hold off the Astros.

"Gary was hitting everything," said Giants manager Charlie Fox. "It's too bad the other guys couldn't rise to the occasion."

Gary Matthews Sr doubled in the 1st, hit a solo-shot off Jerry Reuss in the 4th, singled in the 5th, singled in the 7th and singled in the 9th.

Thus far this season in 7 games Matthews Sr is batting .370 with 2 home runs, 4 RBIs and 7 runs scored. He has 10 hits in 27 at-bats.

Kingman connected against veteran LHP Jerry Reuss for a homer in the 5th inning.
