The Tigers have made the most of their advantages, having beaten Texas three out of four so far this season.

Mickey Lolich comes into the game second in the AL in wins and strikeouts and third in the league in innings pitched .

A walk and single begin the game and Texas has runners at the corners and nobody out in the top of the first. Dave Nelson leads the league in stolen bases but is hitting .188 and he lines out here. Jeff Burroughs then strikes out and there is two down. Frank Howard then flew out, illustrating the woes of the Rangers offense in 1972.

Burroughs comes to bat in the top of the third with runners at first and second and two out and he grounds out to second base.

The Tigers get back-to-back doubles in the bottom of the third for their first hits of the game and take the lead.

After three: Detroit 1 Texas 0.

In the bottom of the fourth, Norm Cash hits his eighth home run of the season, a solo shot measured at 362 feet.

The top of the order comes up for Texas in the fifth with Kubiak at second and one out. Maddox lines right back to the pitcher for the second out. Harrah comes to bat and Kubiak advances to third on a wild pitch. Harrah then brings him home with a base hit that cuts the lead in half.

A throwing error by Detroit's third baseman gives Texas runners at second and third with one out in the top of the sixth. Larry Biittner grounds out to second without bringing a run home and there is two away. Kubiak is intentionally walked to load the bases for Gogolewski and the Rangers pitcher grounds out to first as another scoring threat comes up empty handed.

After six: Detroit 2 Texas 1.

The Rangers get a pair of singles to lead off the top of the eighth. Don Mincher pinch hits for Biittner and promptly strikes out. Kubiak grounds into a fielder's choice that puts runners at the corners and two out. Vic Harris came in to pinch hit for Gogolewski and slapped one into center field to tie the game. Maddox then struck out to retire the side.

Horacio Pina comes in the pitch and the Tigers quickly get the lead back with a pair of runs in the bottom of the eighth.

The Rangers get a walk and a single in the top of the ninth. Frank Howard comes to bat with runners at first and second and one out. Howard rolls a single into center field but Nelson is thrown out at home after trying to score from second base. Dick Billings then strikes out to end the game.

Final score: Detroit 4 Texas 2.
