The Rangers will try to avoid being swept in a three-game home series by the Oakland Athletics. The Rangers have lost six of their last seven. The Athletics have won nine of their last eleven. The Athletics trail the Kansas City Royals by just 4.5 games.

Both the Boston Red Sox and the Cleveland Indians have officially been eliminated from the playoffs.

In the bottom of the second, Harrah scored from second on a Green throwing error. Nelson then added a three-run homer. Mincher pinched in with an RBI single. 10 Rangers came to bat in the inning.

Stanhouse had a no-hitter through three.

After three: Texas 5 Oakland 0.

In the top of the fourth, Pepitone ended the no-hit bid with a two-out RBI single. Green followed with a walk to load the bases. McLain walked as well to force a run in. Campaneris then flew to center to retire the side.

In the top of the fifth, the Athletics loaded the bases with nobody out. Gerry Janeski took the mound for the Rangers. Rudi broughta run home with a 4-3 grounder. Epstein grounded to first to pick up an RBI of his own.

In the top of the sixth, pinch hitter Angel Mangual tied the game with an RBI single.

Bob Locker took the mound for the Athletics in the bottom of the sixth.

After six: Oakland 5 Texas 5.

With a runner on first and one out in the top of the seventh, Horacio Pina took the mound for the Rangers. The Athletics loaded the bases with two out. Pina struck out Green to retire the side.

In the bottom of the seventh, with runners at first and second and one out, Darold Knowles took the mound for the Athletics and got Kubiak to ground into the inning-ending 6-4-3.

With one out in the top of the eighth, Paul Lindblad took the mound for the Rangers. Jackson gave the Athletics the lead with an RBI single.

Diego Segui took the mound for the Athletics in the bottom of the eighth.

In the bottom of the ninth, with runners at first and second and one out, Jim Roland took the mound for the Athletics. With two men out, Harrah tied the game with an RBI single before Burroughs was thrown out trying to advance from first to third.

Casey Cox took the mound for the Rangers in the top of the tenth.

Joe Horlen took the mound for the Athletics in the bottom of the tenth. With the winning run at first and two out, Maddox grounded to short and the game continued.

In the bottom of the eleventh, with runners at first and second and one out, Frank Howard grounded into the inning-ending 4-6-3.

In the top of the twelfth, Green gave the Athletics the lead back with an RBI double. With runners at first and second with one out, Jim Panther took the mound for the Rangers and he got the next two out to keep the deficit at a single run.

Aurelio Monteagudo took the mound for the Athletics in the bottom of the twelfth. With a runner on first and two out, pinch hitter Vic Harris grounded to short to end the game.

The two teams combined for 26 hits in the contest. The Athletics also drew 10 walks.

Final score: Oakland 7 Texas 6 12 innings.
