Yeah, the White Stockings decided that
any ball hit over the wall in Lakefront Park would count as a home run that year. Previously, balls hit over the short right-field and left-field fences counted as doubles only. The result was the grotesquely inflated HR totals for the home team.
In a bit of irony, the site of Lakefront Park - the corner of Michigan Ave and Randolph St in downtown Chicago - is now the location of Wrigley Square, part of Millennium Park.
