Winnipeg’s Oleg Petrov opens the series scoring, but after Hartford tied it, the Whalers get two goals in the last 90 seconds of the frame. I always say it. Those goals are killer. Dino Ciccarelli adds a Hartford goal early in the third, rendering Winnipeg’s two late goals not enough. 4-3 Whalers win game one. The Jets open the scoring again in the 2nd game. Dale Hunter gets the goal. It remains that way until the opening moments of the third. Libor Zabransky makes it 2-0 Jets. Dominik Hasek would stop 29 shots, in his team’s 3-0 shut out victory. Series tied.

Hasek allows nothing in game two!

Alexander Mogilny gets his first finals goal early in the 2nd period of game three, tying the game. The Jets get the next two goals giving them a 3-1 lead. Halfway through the third, the Great One comes through. Wayne Gretzky scores twice in back to back shifts, tying it up, and forcing overtime. In OT, the teams trade chances but can’t score. A 2nd overtime is needed, and it results the same as the first. Nothing. Finally, in the third overtime, Rod Brind’Amour converts on a pass from Wayne Gretzky to win it. They needed 46 extra minutes, but the Whalers come out on top. 4-3 Hartford. Wayne Gretzky would continue to dominate in game four. He scores twice in the first period, and adds another in the third. The hat trick, plus an assist, make him the easy choice for first star. Hartford wins 4-1, putting them just a game away!

Gretzky is looking unstoppable!

Game 5 opens up with Rod Brind’Amour converting a Wayne Gretzky pass short handed to open the scoring. After another Brind’Amour goal, Wayne scores his 18th of the playoffs, making it 3-0 Hartford. The Jets finally get on the board at the 15:42 mark of the third, but Hartford only has to kill another 4 minutes. They do. 3-1 Whalers. They have won the Stanley Cup!
