British Baseball News - Midweek Update
Thursday 26 September
1889

No issues were decided in the midweek round of games, but several titles could be clinched on Saturday after teams moved to the brink of success. Middlesbrough were about to secure the Northern Combination crown yesterday only for Stockton to rally in the ninth inning and beat Wearmouth, extending the race a few more days. Middlesbrough will be champions if they win on Saturday though, just as Drumcondra will secure first place in the Irish League's Dublin Section if they win. They had to wait until today for Kilmainham to play their game with Rathmines, which was postponed yesterday, but Kilmainham took it to keep Drumcondra waiting a little longer.

Elsewhere, defeats for Glasgow and Moncreiffe today mean that Glasgow will claim the Caledonian League crown on Saturday if they win and Moncreiffe lose. The scenario is the same for Leicester in the Central League after they won yesterday and Cannon Hill lost, meaning a repeat of those results on Saturday will end the race. With Kensington and the City of London Club both winning the gap in the Metropolitan League is still two games, while in the Yorkshire League Sheffield were rocked by the news that pitcher Ernest Davis will miss the rest of the regular season with injury. They rallied to beat West of Hull today though and keep themselves level with York with five games to play and the two set to meet at York on Saturday.
