Washington Capitals (9-6-0) at Montreal Canadiens (10-7-1)

Montreal hosts the Capitals with a chance to be tied for 1st in the Atlantic tonight. Montreal has been solid at the Bell Center (8-1-1) this season while the Capitals (4-4-0) have been Ok on the road. LW Lorenzo Bocci has been a bright spot for Montreal and is currently tied for the lead in the NHL with 14 goals. He will Hughes and Ladd will remain on the 1st line together tonight.

The Capitals LD Keith Sutton will attempt to keep that 1st line in check. The 37 year old has 3 goals and 5 points in 15 games this year, but has been strong defensively with his +7 rating. Over his 171 game NHL career, all with Washington he has 25 goals, 107 points with an impressive +42 rating.

Assistant captain, C Xavier Morissette is probably going to be a star in this league. The 19 year old has 1 goal and only 4 points so far this year in 15 games and has been limited to under 15 minutes a game while he develops. Last season was his NHL rookie season, he had 11 goals and 32 points in 82 games with a -8 rating. The Capitals drafted him 9th overall in the 1981 NHL Entry Draft.

RD Marshall Lawson is in his final year of his $4.3 M per year deal. The 33 year old Lawson has 3 goals and 11 points in 15 games this year. Originally Lawson started his career in the 80-81 season as a Flyer, he was traded in January of 1982. In 143 career NHL games he has 17 goals, 64 points with 52 PIMs.

Washington will start Tim Stowell between the pipes, he has started in 11 games with a .902 save %. Montreal will start Mike Blackshear, he is sporting a .887 save % in 15 starts.

Montreal got into penalty trouble early in the 1st but survived it. But it was the Capitals that got the first goal at 10:02 of the 1st. Alejandro Villalobos gets his 5th of the season on the PP. Washington gets its 2nd PP marker at 15:32 when LD Martin Hampl gets his 1st of the year. Washington out shoots Montreal 19 to 11 in the 1st, they were 2 for 6 on the PP while Montreal was 0 for 1.

Washington continues to control the game and gets a 3-0 lead on LW Donald Miles 7th of the season at 1:16. Montreal finally gets on the board shortly after, RD Marek Bartolcic gets his 2nd of the season at 2:10. Washington gets a 3rd PP goal when RW Brian McLane gets his 6th at 3:20, Capitals up 4-1. The goals just keep a coming, C Dave Wright gets his 5th of the season at 6:14 of the 2nd. Montreal makes it 4-3 moments later when LD Yegor Berestnev gets his 2nd of the season at 8:15. Neither goalie is going to improve their save % tonight. Washington grabs another 2 goal lead and make it 5-3 at 11:46 when RD Keith Sutton gets his 4th. The scoresheet is getting full and the period finally ends. Washington out shoots Montreal 13 to 5 in the period and are now 3 for 10 on the PP, Montreal is still 0 for 1.

Montreal makes it interesting as C Dave Wright gets his 6th at 13:15 of the 3rd and the score is now 5-4. Montreal out shooting the Caps 11 to 6 so far in the 3rd. Washington will go on its 11th PP as LD Marc-Andre Berube gets 2 for tripping at 14:23. Montreal is able to kill the penalty and still have three and half minutes to tie, but RD Keith Sutton may have put the dagger in the stomach, he scored his 5th of the year at 16:42 and its 6-4. Montreal will gets their 2nd PP of the game with 1:24 remaining. Montreal runs out of time and lose 6-4.

Capitals C Don Struble was named the 1st star with his 3 assists. The 30 year old has 3 goals and 17 points with a +8 rating in 16 games. Struble was an All-Star in the 1981 season. In 152 games, all with the Capitals he has 51 goals, 143 points, 102 PIMs and a +43 rating.

Boston Bruins LD Tom Grimes will miss a few days due to a sore back. The 29 year old Grimes has 2 goals and 10 points with a +13 rating in 18 games. The 1982 Hart Trophy winner has yet to miss a game over his career and I am sure he will do everything to stay in the line-up with this injury.

Chicago Blackhawks RW Luke Blanleil had 2 assists in a 5-2 win over the Jets. The 29 year old Blanleil has 3 goals and 13 points with a +6 rating in 16 games. Blanleil has played in 174 NHL games, all with the Blackhawks and he now has 45 career goals with 151 points and a +59 rating.

Ottawa Senators RD Rory Bouffard had 2 goals in a 2-1 win over the Panthers. The 35 year old Bouffard now has 6 goals and 2 assists in 19 games. Bouffard was originally with the Flames until being traded on September 26th to the Senators. In 181 career NHL games Bouffard has 33 goals, 109 points with 440 PIMs and a +40 rating.

Nashville Senators C Jeremy Longboat had a goal and 2 assists in a 4-2 win over the Hurricanes. The 25 year old Longboat has 9 goals and 14 assists for 23 points in 17 games. Longboat an All-Star in 1982 now has 68 goals, 92 assists and 160 points in 181 career NHL games all with the Predators.

The Buffalo Sabres and Edmonton Oilers complete a blockbuster trade. The Oilers will send LW Martin Vondracek to the Sabres in exchange for G Saku Heikkinen. The 23 year old Vondracek has 15 goals, 17 assists for 32 points in 19 games. Original a Flame, he became a Oiler after a trade at the 1981 trade deadline. Vondracek has 65 goals with 135 points in 184 career NHL games. The 39 year old Heikkinen has been a spare part for the Sabres but has been a star in the league. This season he is 2-1-0 with a 2.69 GAA and .902 save %. The 2-time All-Star has a career 86-36--6 record with 17 SO's, a 2.17 GAA and .918 save %.

Edmonton Oilers LD Frank Christian had 2 assists in a 3-2 win over the Maple Leafs. The 31 year old Christian has 6 goals, 10 assists for 16 points in 15 games. The 1981 Norris Trophy winner has played in 169 career NHL games and has 36 goals with 135 points and a +38 rating.
