It was not a no hitter and save situation should not matter. And you are correct that you see this often.
However... this was discussed in the thread and Matt Arnold stated that it was
not correct AI behavior and that it
was, indeed, a bug (see Matt Arnold's post here:

This is because the pitcher, if he is not going to be pitch the next half inning, should be pinch hit for due to the injury risk of batting and then potentially running the bases.
