Early 90’s Expansion
The NHL plans to expand by 4 teams in the early 90’s and 4 more in the late 90’s.
We will add 2 teams in the west and 2 in the east in the early 90’s (1992-93 and 1993-94).
All population figures are 1990/91 Urban Areas
West Candidates: (PICK 2)
Milwaukee – 1.2 million people - Needs to build an arena – had a WHA team
San Diego – 2.3 Million people - Needs to build an arena – Just lost their NHL team to Calgary
Phoenix – 2.0 Million People - America West Arena will be done for 92 – never had a pro team
Denver – 1.5 Million people - Has McNichols Arena – had a WHA team
Kansas City – 1.2 million people - Has Kemper Arena – had a WHA team
Dallas – 3.1 Million people - Has Reunion Arena – briefly had a WHA team
Anaheim – 9.4 Million people in LA - Honda Center ready in 93 – LA area had 2 teams with the WHA Sharks
East Candidates (Pick 2)
Hamilton – 500 thousand people but near western Toronto suburbs - Has Copps Coliseum – no NHL team for decades
Ottawa – 700 thousand people - New Arena may not be done until 96 – Had a WHA team
Miami – 3.1 Million people in Miami and Fort Lauderdale - Has Miami Arena – Had a WHA team
Tampa/St. Petersburg – 1.7 Million people - New Arena may not be done until 96 – could play in the dome being built – never had a pro team
Long Island – 15.5 Million people in NY - Has an arena in Nassau County – Had a WHA team called the Islanders
New Jersey – 15.5 Million people in NY – Had an arena – no pro teams on the Jersey side of New York
Atlanta – 2.1 Million people - Has an arena and had a WHA team
