Montreal Canadiens (31-22-3) at Anaheim Ducks (32-21-5)

Montreal head across the border and fly south the face the Ducks at the Honda Center. Montreal beat Anaheim 3-2 in Montreal in the only meeting between the teams this season. RW Al Ladd has not had a point in 5 games, since scoring twice against Pittsburgh on January 20th. He has been a -4 in the process. The 30 year old had 32 goals in the 80-81 season with Chicago, had 24 in the 81-82 season and has 19 so far this season.

Anaheim is 4th in the West with 69 points, 17 behind the Conference leading Oilers. The Ducks lead the NHL with a 90.5% PK rate. Despite being in the middle of the pack for goal scoring, they average only 28 shots a game which ranks them 23rd in the NHL.

C Nate Elgie leads the Ducks with 18 goals, 31 assists and in points with 49 in 49 games. The 27 year old two-way forward was the 1981 Calder Trophy winner and a 1981 All-Star. In 184 games with the Ducks, he has 65 goals, 171 points, 120 PIMs and a +34 rating.

RD Daniel Gallagher is 2nd on the Ducks with 37 points, including 10 goals in 58 games. The 30 year old defensive defenseman is in his 3rd season with Anaheim and has 28 goals, 98 points, 50 PIMs and a +34 rating in 175 career NHL games.

C Geoff Caveney is 3rd on the team with 35 points, including 16 goals in 58 games. The 20 year old two-way player had 18 goals and 43 points in his rookie season with the Ducks playing 82 games last year. The former Kelowna Rocket was selected in the 2nd round, 43rd overall by the Ducks in the 1981 NHL Entry Draft.

Montreal starts G Mike Blackshear, he has 26 wins in 46 games with a .897 save % while the Ducks start G Coy Crane, he has 24 wins in 43 games with a .927 save %.

Montreal scores early at 3:28 to make it 1-0. LW Jiri Bohm gets his 4th of the year. Montreal goes up 2-0 at 15:36 on the PP when RW John Herrod gets his 2nd goal with the Canadiens. It Herrod's 15th of the year. Montreal gets up 3-0 at 18:39 when RD Matej Ouhrabka gets his 5th of the year. Montreal out shots the Ducks 19 to 13 in the 1st period.

There was no scoring in the 2nd period as the teams played a little bit more conservatively with the Ducks out shooting the Canadiens 13 to 10. Montreal is 1 for 6 on the PP while Anaheim is 0 for 3.

Montreal goes up 4-0 at 3:02 of the 3rd when LW Lorenzo Bocci gets his 22nd of the season on the PP. The Ducks PK is looking human tonight. The Ducks do break up Blackshear's shut out bid at 4:04 when C Nate Elgie gets his 19th on the PP and it is now 4-1. Montreal shuts down the Ducks outshooting them 15 to 3 in the 3rd for the win.

Montreal's LW Lorenzo Bocci is named the 1st star, he had a goal and 2 assists. The 29 year old now has 22 goals and 37 points in 38 games. In 182 career NHL games he has 73 goals, 142 points, 293 PIMs and a +51 rating.

Toronto Maple Leafs RW Ryan Lewis was named the NHL Player of the Month for January. The 28 year old has 17 goals and 41 points in 38 games this year. In 162 NHL games, all with the Leafs, he has 64 goals, 147 points, 90 PIMs and a +40 rating. Its announced later that he will be out indefinitely with a fractured elbow.

Boston Bruins G Jerry Welch was named the NHL Goalie of the Month. The 30 year old Welch is the 1981 Vezina Trophy winner and 2-time Jennings Trophy winner has 26 wins with a 1.90 GAA, a .923 save % and 7 SO's in 43 games this season. In 159 career NHL games, all with Boston he has a 104-38-15 record with a 1.82 GAA and .922 save % with 25 SO's.

Edmonton Oilers RW David Panniers had 2 goals and an assist in a 5-2 win over the Red Wings. The 30 year old Panniers now has 19 goals and 60 points in 58 games. On his 3rd NHL team including 31 games with the Hurricanes and 121 with the Sabres, Panniers has 79 goals, 190 points, 125 PIMs and a +53 rating in 210 career NHL games.

At the tradeline there was a big trade today, The Boston Bruins have sent G Jerry Welch to the Tampa Bay Lightning in exchange for RW Rod Dow and RD Jiri Voboril. The 29 year old Dow has 14 goals and 32 points in 56 games for the Lightning, he is a former Canadien. The 29 year old Voboril had 1 point in 3 games for the Lightning. The 30 year old Welch is a 2-time Jennings Trophy Winner and won the 1981 Vezina Trophy. He was just selected as the NHL Goalie of the Month.

The trade deadline just more interesting. The Tampa Bay Lightning just shipped the previously acquired G Jerry Welch to the Columbus Blue Jackets for a 3rd round pick in the 1983 NHL Entry Draft. Welch is the NHL career leader with a 1.82 GAA, 2nd in career wins at 104, 1st in career save % at .922 and tied for 1st in career SO's with 25.

In another big trade, the Pittsburgh Penguins shipped the rights to RW Sebastien Bernier to the Dallas Stars for C Micheal McDaniel. The 20 year old Bernier has not played this season, after having 9 goals and 19 points in 77 games in 81-82. He is a restricted FA. He was the Penguins 177th overall pick in the 1981 NHL Entry Draft. The 30 year old McDaniel has 21 goals and 57 points in 60 games this season. The 3-time All-Star now has 69 goals, 179 points, 191 PIMs with a +30 rating in 197 career NHL games with the Stars and Wild.

Another interesting trade took place. The Pittsburgh Penguins sent RW Gary Fox and RW Carlos Gabriel to the Winnipeg Jets for C Julien Groulx and a 1983 5th round pick. The 26 year old Fox has 24 goals and 52 points in 57 games this season. In 214 NHL games with the Kings and Penguins, he has 57 goals, 131 points, 150 PIMs and a +3 rating. The 32 year old Gabriel has 11 goals and 33 points in 57 games for the Pens this year. The 20 year old Groulx has 14 goals and 36 points in 51 games for the Jets, He was the Jets 1st round, 22nd overall pick in the 1981 NHL Entry Draft.

Carolina Hurricanes RW Patrick Connor had a goal and an assist in a 3-0 win over the Stars. The 28 year old Connor now has 31 goals and 59 points in 46 games. The 1981 Maurice Richard Trophy winner has 106 career NHL goals, 211 points, 382 PIMs and a +61 rating in 201 NHL games, all with Carolina. Connor is 3rd in the NHL for career points and 1st in career goals.
