Walkers news: July 1 -- St. Louis 6, Kansas City 4
Record: 42-38, 2nd, 3.5 GB Cedar Rapids
St. Louis scored three times in the first inning and two more in the third to propel it to a 6-4 win over Kansas City at Municipal Stadium (1969).
Rhys Hoskins (double), Andrew Benintendi (single) and J.T. Realmuto (single) all drove in runs with hits off Kansas City starting pitcher Alex Wood to help establish that early3-0 lead.
After the Pit Masters' Brett Phillips hit the first of his two homers in the game, this one a two-run shot in the second off Walkers starting pitcher Danny Duffy, to make it 3-2, Benintendi answered with a two-run shot of his own off Wood in the bottom half of the inning.
Phillips second two-run blast of the game, this time in the eighth off reliever Bobby Poyner, made it 6-4.
But Tommy Kahnle pitched around a lead-off single in the ninth to earn his 14th save.
Duffy turned in a solid start, allowing just the two runs on six hits in six innings. He struck out seven and walked one.
