This Weeks Major Transactions
The Philadelphia Phillies have traded LF
John Briggs to the Milwaukee Brewers for SP
Ray Peters and 1B
Pete Koegel. The 27 year old
Briggs is hitting 333 with 1 HR and 5 RBIs in 13 games. For his career,
Briggs is hitting .251 with 56 HRs and 211 RBIs in 723 games.
Briggs was in the middle of a fight between
Dick Allen and
Frank Thomas in 1965. Apparently
Allen was sticking up for
Briggs when he was getting needled by
Thomas.
Allen broke
Thomas's jaw with a bat.
Thomas was sold to the Astros a week later.
Briggs missed much of the 1970 season with a pulled leg muscle. The 24 year old
Peters has yet to pitch this season, he was 0-2 with a 11.88 ERA in 2 starts for the Brewers in 1970. The 23 year old
Koegel is hitting .400 with 1 HR and 1 RBI in 1 game this year.
The Cleveland Indians have sold 2B
Larry Brown to the Oakland Athletics. The 31 year old is hitting .093 with 0 HRs and 0 RBIs in 13 games for the Indians. The 150 pound Brown was described by the Sporting News as "one of the top shortstops in the league....scintillated defensively" Brown is hitting a career .236 with 46 HRs and 240 RBIs in 937 games. In 1965 the Brown family experienced a family tragedy when his run over by a car. She fully recovered but Brown was definitely distracted for the remainder of the season. In 1970
Alvin Dark the manager primarily used Brown as a utlility player and Brown expressed unhappiness with the way he was used in 1971 spring training finally leading to this trade.
Washington Senators 1B
Curt Flood has left the team without permission. The 33 year old after being out of baseball since 1969 after a trade from the Cardinals sent him to the Phillies has struggled since trying to comeback. In 7 games this season Flood is hitting just .231 with 1 HR and 3 RBIs in 28 plate appearances. The 7-time Gold Glove winner and 3-time All Star maybe done for good. Floods lawsuit against the MLB for its reserve clause has basically bankrupted the former star ball player. Its also suggested that in addition to financial difficulties he maybe effected by his addition to alcohol. The Senators were notified by telegram that Flood was planning to leave the country and he was later located in Spain on an Island where he was part of the ownership of a bar.
