05/14/1973 - Giants Lose to Padres in Walk Off, Waste Solid Start

The San Francisco Giants got a superb performance from pitcher Jim Willoughby. Still, it wasn't enough to beat San Diego. The Padres won the game, 4-3. In spite of the loss, Willoughby was named the player of the game. He threw 7 innings of 5-hit ball. San Diego reliever Vicente Romo was credited with the win, to go to 3-0. Randy Moffitt took the loss for San Francisco. San Diego now sits at 13-24, while San Francisco falls to 17-19.

Enzo Hernandez was the walk-off hero for San Diego. With the game tied in the bottom of the ninth inning, the Padres pinch hitter hit a dramatic run-scoring single to send the teams home.

"This place sure got loud," said , the San Diego manager.

Dave Kingman had put the Giants up earlier in the game with a solo homer off starting LHP Randy Jones.
