1973 Preview

Coming off a solid slugging year in 1972, in which he tied the Big Cat Johnny Mize for most homers by a rookie with 38, Giants 1B Dave Kingman is primed for his second full year in the majors.

He had a decent spring with a .243 batting average, but his power numbers were down (only 5 HR in 115 AB), as manager Charlie Fox and hitting coach Joey Amalfitano tried to get him to cut down on his stroke a bit.

"I think he can hit for higher average and still lead the league in homers," said Fox. "The guy can hit it out of any park...even Yellowstone. He doesn't need to overswing."
