Friday, May 17, Year II

We are in Dallas, Texas to play the Eagles a 3 game series over the weekend. They just won 2 of 3 in Oakland. We swept them in three 1 run games last weekend in Portland. They are 4th in scoring in the PCL with 4.27 runs per game (Portland is 8th with 3.79). They have passed us for 1st place in fewest runs allowed again with 2.92 per game (Portland is 2nd with 3.11). Scoring is up this year in the National league, but down in the Pacific Coast League.

Portland Beavers (24-14 .632 in 1st place in the PCL West) at
Dallas Eagles (24-13 .649 in 1st place in the PCL East)

POR: Frank Martin (27-R 5-2 2.85) vs. DAL: Ralph Hoskins (26-R 4-3 2.47)

We beat Hoskins last weekend, but he only gave us 5 hits and 2 runs (1 earned) in 8 innings.

Martin has won 3 in a row.

Weather: 71 F, Partly Cloudy, with a 10 MPH wind blowing out to left.
Attendance: 23,868

Top of the First:
Barry Tucker beats out an infield hit and steals 2nd. Omar Flores grounds a hit up the middle and Tucker scores without a throw! 1 to 0, Beavers! Flores steals 2nd. Dave Benya grounds a hit up the middle and Flores heads home and beats the throw! 2 to 0, Beavers. Jeff Austin lines out to center. Gordon Saunderson flies out to center. Benya steals 2nd, our third steal of the inning! Dave Lesley lines out to deep center.

Bottom of the First:

Chris Hagerty gets jammed, but still bloops a hit to left. Steve Thwing grounds into a force at 2nd, 4-6. Full count to Edwin Juan and he tries to check his swing on the payoff pitch but gets rung up! Steve DeMuro is up and I am not averse to walking him, even without 1st base open, but we do not and he grounds out to 1st, unassisted!

Top of the Second:
With 1 out, Eddie Thomas grounds a hit to left and he steals 2nd and goes to 3rd when the throw is into center field. With the infield in, Frank Martin hammers one on the ground to the right side, but 1B Joe Aloe makes a great stop to get the out. Barry Tucker flies out to shallow center.

Top of the Fourth:

Dave Lesley leads off with a single to right and Tony Casarez draws a 4 pitch walk. With 1 out, P Frank Martin makes the 2nd out by bunting the runners up. Barry Tucker lines a hit to right and Lesley scores! 3 to 0, Beavers! Tucker tries to steal, but gets caught when they have a pitchout on... There seem to be a LOT of pitchouts in this League...

Bottom of the Fifth:
With 2 outs, Gill Blair doubles to the left field corner and then P Ralph Hoskins singles him home... 3 to 1, Beavers. Chris Hagerty then doubles and Hoskins scores from 1st... 3 to 2, Beavers. The Bullpen is frantically notified. A wild pitch sends Hagerty to 3rd. Steve Thwing lines one hard to center, but Barry Tucker runs it down!

Bottom of the Eighth:
Chris Hagerty squibs one, but C Dave Benya can't find the handle and Hagerty reaches on the error. Steve Thwing bunts him to 2nd. Jim Bakutis (27-S), the 3rd straight ex-Beaver to bat, is sent up. A wild pitch sends Hagerty to 3rd. We need a strikeout not, so we make a Call to the Bullpen: Mitch Dowdell (25-L). He inherits a count of 2-0. Bakutis swings at his first pitch and lines a hit to center... Tie game: 3 to 3. Steve DeMuro grounds onto a force at 2nd, 3-6. He gets thrown out stealing for the second time today!

Top of the Ninth:

New Pitcher: Jose Uria (25-R), their closer. 0.66 ERA with 1 BB and 16 SO in 12.2 IP. That is some kind of nasty.... Last year, his numbers were not that pretty and we hung 3 losses on him. We have not faced him yet this season. Eddie Thomas leads off and lines one hard to right, but it is caught. PH Tom Borden (30-L) grounds out to the pitcher. Barry Tucker grounds a double over the 3rd base bag! Omar Flores gets walked intentionally. Dave Benya strikes out....

Bottom of the Ninth:

New Pitcher: Don Schmidt (27-R). They go down in order!

Extras!

Top of the Tenth:
We go down in order.

Bottom of the Tenth:
With 2 outs, Chris Hagerty doubles to center, but Steve Thwing grounds out to 2nd!

Top of the Eleventh:
New Pitcher: Steve Patterson (30-L). 5.65 ERA. Tony Casarez leads off with a line drive to right for a hit! Eddie Thomas bunts him over to 2nd. PH Larry Sinchak (31-R) gets walked intentionally (wish that was a shorter word...). PH Woody Griesbach (24-R) flies out to right. PH Rollie Ferree (28-R), in his Major League debut, is sent up. Think of the stories he can tell his grand kids with a game winning hit in his first ever AB! He swings at a 3-2 pitch and strikes out....

Bottom of the Eleventh:

New Pitcher: Barry Chapman (27-R). Larry Sinchak stays in to play 3rd, Rollie Ferree is in center and Woody Griesbach is in right. Jim Bakutis leads off with a 4 pitch walk... Steve DeMuro doubles to the right field corner and Bakutis scores from 1st... Editor's note: DeMuro should have been credited with a triple...
