I'd do what makes you happy - I love to see some of the rivalry games and penalty filled games and it inspires me... also by keeping track I get a feel of players/teams that are red - hot (Chi - Patrick Kane, Mtl - Max Pacioretty) and good defensive teams (Rangers, Hurricanes)... So it does serve an advance scouting purpose as well as immersive enjoyment for me.
But overall even though I crave the input from others, I know I have to do what makes me happy or I will lose interest and another dynasty will bite the dust... Which is what I'm afraid of when OOTP 16 comes out!!!
