The first round of the AL playoffs has the two best teams in baseball facing off. Both Boston, with Ray Culp (21-6, 2.04) and Gaylord Perry (20-8, 3.07) and Oakland, with Bill Hands (22-8, 3.40) and Catfish Hunter (20-7, 3.09) have two 20 game winners. Both teams also hit the ball a ton. Boston is led by MVP candidate SS Rico Petrocelli (34 hr, 134 rbi, .307), CF Reggie Smith (26 117 .297), DH Carl Yastrzemski (23 96 .295), 3B Darrell Evans (22 92 .288) and C Carlton Fisk (16 69 .275). Oakland is led by their own MVP candidate in RF Reggie Jackson (27 103 .321), CF Rick Monday (27 101 .273) and LF Joe Rudi (20 86 .261).
