In defense of their 1972 World Series title, the Mets have made a few moves. Nolan Ryan surprisingly wins the opening day assignment over Tom Seaver. And Jon Matlack finally makes the rotation. But will it be a permanent move? Jerry Koosman will be off the Injured List in 6 days. On opening day the rotation is Ryan (21-7, 2.08 287 Ks), Seaver(26-3, 1.55 250 Ks), Matlack (10-6 2.51), Ray Sadecki (4-3, 2.24) and Gary Gentry (7-4 2.44). Only Tug McGraw and Cal Koonce return in the bullpen. Rookies Elias Sosa, Craig Swan and Brent Strom round out the pen.
1969 World Series hero Cleon Jones was released to make room for Cecil Cooper in the outfield. John Milner also replaces Tommie Agee in centerfield to start the season. It seems like an unusual choice, when you could have Ken Singleton in center and Milner in left. Preseason predictions have the Mets finishing 90-72 and 2 games out of first place. Hopefully, they aren't as accurate as they were last season.
The lineup on opening day is:
1. John Milner, CF
2. Wayne Garrett, 3B
3. Cecil Cooper, RF
4. Ken Singleton, LF
5. Donn Clendenon, 1B
6. Ken Boswell, 2B
7. Bob Watson, C
8. Tim Foli, SS
