We are in Milwaukee to play the Brewers a 4 game series. They lost 3 of 4 in San Francisco over the weekend and have lost 9 of their last 10 games. This is our first meeting this season. We were 4-4 against them last year. The Brewers are 4th in the PCL in scoring with 4.31 runs per game (Portland is last with 3.32). They are last in fewest runs allowed with 4.88 per game (Portland is 8th with 3.84). Their run differential is -27 and ours is -26.

Portland Beavers (22-28 .440 10.5 GB in 7th place in the PCL West) at
Milwaukee Brewers (21-27 .438 15 GB in 6th place in the PCL East)

POR: Joe Hoehn (27-R 0-2 4.76) Rookie vs. MIL: Chris Baker (29-R 2-2 3.77)

This could get ugly.... Hoehn is prone to HR and Miller Park is an easy place to hit them and the Brewers are 2nd in the PCL in hitting them... Hoehn actually had a Quality Start last time out, but just barely.

Baker had a save (his only relief appearance all season) and a no decision start against us last year. We scored 5runs in 4.1 IP in the start.

Top of the First:
Brian Mitchell doubles down the right field line! Jack Hinckley grounds a hit to left and Mitchell heads home. The Gold Glover, Fernando Martinez, makes a horrible throw and Mitchell is safe and Hinckley goes to 2nd. Martinez gets an error. 1 to 0, Beavers! Shannon Kuchta did not mean to bunt one, but that is what he does and is thrown out by the catcher, 2-3, and Hinckley goes to 3rd. No credit for a SH, though. Fernando Mexicano grounds a hit to center and Hinckley scores! 2 to 0, Beavers! Glenn Snowden grounds into a 6-4-3 double play...

Bottom of the First:
Kenny Masline flies out to center. Steve Hermanson strikes out! Andres Garcia grounds one up the middle, but SS Juan Rojas makes a great stop and throws him out! 1-2-3!

Top of the Second:
Jim Shippy lines one down into the left field corner and gets a double! But the next three all make outs...

Bottom of the Second:

With 2 outs, Antonio Flores gets beaned and steals 2nd. Bill Watson hits a home run to left... Tie game: 2 to 2.

Top of the Third:
Brian Mitchell leads off with an infield hit, but hurts himself and calls out Trudy the Trainer.... Pinch-runner: Rick Woodell (31-L). He'll stay in the game to play 3rd and Fernando Mexicano will move to left and Jose Julio will move to right. With 2 outs, Fernando Mexicano grounds a hit to center and Woodell goes to 3rd. Glenn Snowden hits a home run to right!!! 5 to 2, Beavers!!!

Bottom of the Third:

PH Dean Powers (33-R) leads off with a double down the right field line. Kenny Masline walks on 4 pitches... Steve Hermanson grounds a hit to right and Powers scores... 5 to 3, Beavers. The Bullpen is stirring. Andres Garcia lines a hit to right and the bases are loaded for the League leader in HR, Fernando Martinez. He takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4 to force in a run... 5 to 4, Beavers. Larry McNeil grounds into a 1-2-3 double play! Antonio Flores lines a hit to right and both base runners score.... 6 to 5, Brewers. Bill Watson lines a hit to right and Flores goes to 3rd... Rick Fountain, an automatic out, lines a hit to center and Flores scores... 7 to 5, Brewers. Dean Powers lines a hit to center and Watson scores... 8 to 5, Brewers... Kenny Masline grounds a hit to right and another run is in... 9 to 5, Brewers.... Lets see how many 2 out base hits, Hoehn can give up in a row... So far, we are at 5.... Steve Hermanson grounds out to 2nd...

Top of the Fourth:

New Pitcher: Juan Romero (26-R) with a 2.45 ERA in 18.1 IP. With 2 outs, PH Kurt Cunning (30-R) lines a hit to right. Rick Woodell hits a home run to right center!! 9 to 7, Brewers.

Bottom of the Fifth:

P David Fuentes (25-R) strikes out the side in order!

Lost - 12 to 7

We had 12 hits and made no errors
Milwaukee had 14 hits and made 1 error

Joe Hoehn (L 0-3) went 3 innings, allowed 9 runs, 9 hits, 1 home run, 2 walks, 1 HBP and struck out 1.
RHP David Fuentes went 2 scoreless innings, allowed 1 hit and struck out 4. He is great as long as the game is not on the line...
LHP Chuck Purnell went 1.1 innings, allowed 1 runs, 2 hits and struck out 1.
RHP Jim Kokos faced 1 batter and got 1 out, but also intentionally walked a batter and that one scored.
LHP Dick Register faced 2 batters, gave up 1 run, 1 hit, 1 home run and 1 walk.
RHP Roy Huls went 1.1 scoreless innings, allowed 1 hit and struck out 2.

Chris Baker went 3 innings, gave us 5 runs, 7 hits, 1 home run, no walks and struck out 1.
RHP Juan Romero (W 2-1) went 3 innings, gave us 2 runs, 4 hits, 1 home run and struck out 1.

C Jim Shippy hit 2 doubles. PH Kurt Cunning had a hit and scored a run.

For Milwaukee, 1B Andres Garcia had 3 hits. CF Bill Watson had 2 hits with his 6th home run, a walk (INT), scored 3 runs and had 2 RBI. PH Dong-hak Shong hit a 3 run home run, his first of the season.

Trudy's report on Brian Mitchell is a gluteus strain that will take 2 to 3 weeks to heal. He can play, but will not be able to run very well, she days. Well, running is 99% of his game, so that means he will be worthless....
